softwarez Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Hi, the bike is a Honda CBF1000.The bike turns over but wont start and then begins to click..(it shows voltage however). I replaced the battery with a brand new one today and the same still happens! However, when I attach a booster pack to it, it starts! The voltage is showing 12.68v and I charged the battery properly before installation etc etc.. any ideas? Thanks. Quote

Could be a knackered regulator/rectifier. i dont think it would stop it starting it would just stop it charging sounds electrical to me pull your plugs check the gap check the connection on the HT leads check all earth straps check all positive connections too especially the starter motor and the starter relay Quote
Fozzie Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 Check that the starter motor isnt all gummed up and things like that to rule that out! Then if that isnt the case then swap out the starter relay/solenoid and then look into things like the HT leads and as stu above says just check the spark plugs...I wouldnt imagine its the spark plugs if it was running for a while. How did the problem develop and how was the bike being ridden before? (As in regularity) Quote
softwarez Posted June 7, 2011 Author Posted June 7, 2011 Thanks for the advice above. The thing which gets me is that it will start with a booster pack attached...Also: The bike is run about 1-2 times a month. P.S - I changed the plugs etc + full oil change only a couple of days ago (the problem existed before this though). Quote
Colin the Bear Posted June 7, 2011 Posted June 7, 2011 If it works fine with a booster for the battery, it seems like either the new battery is lacking power, check the rating and charge condition, or you're loosing battery power somewhere. Check for loose connections and broken earth straps. Will it start if you bump it? Could be a worn out starter motor sapping battery power. Check connections to starter and earth straps. Quote
Tango Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 12.68v for a new battery sounds a bit low to me. Thought you would expect nearer 13v. Check the voltage with the booster connected. Also check voltage of battery when you hit the starter. I suspect your new battery is not up to the job. Voltage is dropping off when you hit the starter. Or the starter is pulling too much power. Maybe you'd be best off taking bike to auto electricians.Bob. Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Check the earth connections, both where the battery lead connects to the frame, and if there are any earthing straps connecting the engine to the frame, and the solenoid earthing.Remove, clean any corrosion, replace making sure its a good tight fit, then cover with silicon greaseCommon problem with Hondas Quote
Bob R1 Posted June 8, 2011 Posted June 8, 2011 Had a similar problem with an old Fireblade, would start with a booster pack but not on its own, even though the battery was o.k. ,...the starter was replaced problem cured, seems it was knackerd and needed alot of current to turn it over ......worth a check..
