donhuzayfa Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 Hi guys, just wanted to know, when you drive behind the guys board at slow speed, how many mph is it approximately? 3mph 4mph? I need to know so I can practise, also the slalom, are the cones placed roughly around the width of a parking bay,eg - < say those are the bays, would it roughly be- one cone here,- another here- another here etc....?also, when you do a life-saver, how far back are you ACTUALLY meant to be looking, right down the side?? or just near to the rear tyre?? Takanta Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 I was told that you no longer have to ride behind the examiners board, apparently he just watches you and you have to ride as slowly as you can.theres plenty of vids on youtube of the mod1, point of view vids aswell. Quote
olidavey Posted July 17, 2011 Posted July 17, 2011 The guy doesn't lead when you do the slow speed exercise. Just aim for a slow walking pace. Use the rear break, half engage the clutch and give a decent amount of throttle. For the swerve you go between two cones, then approx 10m later, there are 4 cones.Imagine the 1s are the cones.1-----11------11-----1The cones straight on are for the emergency stop, and the ----- line to the right is where you need to swerve into.BTW there is a speed measuring device there so don't ease off the throttle too early. Get a friend to stand alongside your bike, in the next "lane". Tell him to walk slowly backwards till you can see him in your mirror. The area in front of him is the lifesaver zone. The area behind him is mirror zone. Now pretend he's a car, and you'll understand why it's so important to look at that zone before a change of direction to the left OR the right. Also worth bearing in mind that I recall a bike cop once saying "I can sit in a bikers blindspot for 10 minutes without him knowing I'm there". Scary innit? Quote

You don't ride behind the board, the examiner stands away from you and watches you ride slowly to a controlled stop. It's basically as slow as you can without losing balance! I was never told a specific speed as such. The cones are in a straight line, can't remember if they are 4 or 5m apart - the measurements are somewhere on th DSA website. With the lifesaver you are supposed to look to where your blind spot is, I can't physically turn my head all the way round so just dropped my shoulder to look behind it. Quote
Katie Posted July 18, 2011 Posted July 18, 2011 I had to redo my slow ride as it wasn't slow enough first time. Don't know the exact speed but it was a slow walk and the examiner walked behind where I did mine (Lincoln) although I don't think this is the norm Quote
Comrade Posted July 19, 2011 Posted July 19, 2011 cana really remember looking at speed, just match the clutch control to the speed he is walking, use back brake to keep bike up right and help control speed if you need it, looking at your speedo will make you balls the whole thing up Quote

Don't know the exact speed but it was a slow walk and the examiner walked behind where I did mine (Lincoln) although I don't think this is the norm I did mine at Lincoln and had to ride behind his outstretched arm holding his board.its slow walking pace and the idea is yes, to ride slow but also not to get too close..so treat it as the rear of a car and leave some distance..don't get your front wheel to close to his arm Quote
