short version

bikes been garaged for 3-4 months with start ups every week. some times battery cuts out and it needs to be charged up but i thought it just needed a run so out i went tonight after a 8hr charge and it went again so i pushed it back the 3 miles home

do i need a new one or am i doing something wrong?

Right I don't know much about batteries but here's what I think any how.

If you can test the output of the battery to see what sort of charge it's supplying and also to see if it is definitely the battery and not any other issue causing the bike to cut out. As far as I'm lead to believe the bike engine should really be doing all the work after the bike is started and should help to maintain the charge of the battery.

If you can drain the battery to as close to zero as you can before recharging it, as this sometimes helps the battery retain its new charge (no idea why).

Obviously I don't know what charger you have but check that 8 hours is enough or that the light has gone green or however it shows fully charged.

If it's still cutting out, I'd get a new battery. If it cuts out after that they you have a fault somewhere in the wiring I guess

Probably not much help but it's all I got.

Good Luck :)

Probably the battery, but I wouldn't flatten it, that,s for nicads! Trickle charge it for 24 hrs at least. Don,t use a car charger, too many amps. If this doesn,t work , borrow a mate,s battery, to check if it,s your charging system.

wow i feel really annoyed went to jordons and they said the battery was done for. so i bought another battery and new charger and went out it was ok until i turned to bike off then all went tits up

this is what happens it charges up fine and can be turned on and off as many times as you like no problem. then when you go out for say 40 mins and the bike is warm and you turn off the bike it won't turn back on. the screen flicks and the battery makes a clicking noise and exhaust dial spins around and the battery wont start the bike but everything else seems to work fine horn, side light ect

any idea what the problem could be

just did a quick charge and turned it on and it cut out after 10 mins and the bike felt really hot in the garage at the front end

sounds like the bikes not charging the battery

have you got a multi meter ? you can easily check if you have one

a friend is a motor electrician and he said the bike is not charging and its its draining the battery straight away.

he checked all the fuses and the wiring at the back and he could see no fault

ah plenty of charge in the battery brand new yesterday and went on charge for over 12 hrs

could the voltage regulator go?

so is it draining the battery when stood not running or when you go for a ride?

it starts draining as soon as the ignition is turned on

It could be the reg/rect or Alternator

Have you checked all connections between battery, reg/rect and alternator, especially the earths?

It must be a substantial drain to flatten it so quick?

im not sure it could a connection as until recently it been charging the battery and most of the wires are taped up

drains it from full to dead in around 30 mins

get the closest one to pick it up

how far is the closest one? remove the headlight bulb and ride it there the headlight will be draining a lot

ask them for another bike to use in the mean time too

Thinking about it, it's draining so quick as your headlamp is on all the time, plus fuel injection and pump all use power.

If not a connection then a component has failed, but it's quite a new bike with low miles, so although it's possible, I would always start with the cheap options first.

Good luck getting it sorted :thumb:
