Susieque Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 This is not bike related, sorry The chrome reflective finish in one of the headlight units on our campervan has completely gone! Without taking the unit off, we can only assume that either the chrom has peeled/flaked off or it has rusted. The headlight works fine but obviously isn't very good because it doesn't reflect the light. Is it possible to have this sort of thing re-chromed? Our camper is so old, and parts are as rare as rocking horse sh*t!!! Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 As long as the glass lens will come off the headlamp then it should be able to be re-chromed quite easily, just google hard chrome plating in your area Quote
Susieque Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 Thanks! I'm pretty sure it's too old to be some fancy sealed unit! Has anyone any experience of having something re-chromed? Like cost?? Quote
Stu Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 dont be too surprised as my dads 1972 land rover has sealed units! you can usually get them apart though cover the reflector in tin foil Quote
Susieque Posted February 15, 2012 Author Posted February 15, 2012 I had thought about that Stu, but also thought that it might not be smooth enough and would reflect the light wrongly I've also got some silver spray - would that work? Quote
Guest Hodgy Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Silver spray wouldn't work, sorry, but it shouldn't cost very much to have it re-chromed Quote
megawatt Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 Have it rechromed, my old Mondeo needed new headlights coz the chrome fell off. Costs a lot more than re-chroming. Quote

Stu Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 cheaper to look for a unit on fleabay thats the problem you just cant get them! Quote
eastanglianbiker Posted February 15, 2012 Posted February 15, 2012 cant remember what year your camper is but it might be worth contacting this guy http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Peugeot-Boxer ... 27c36e1634 Quote
Roadtorque Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Think it was halfords, I saw spray on chrome finish, but not sure how it would stand up to the bulb heat though SueYes there are places were you can get it chromed but will need to be on a copper base to do the job right, Quote
cruz Posted February 16, 2012 Posted February 16, 2012 Reflectors are usually of such thin material that rechroming would not be practicable. If badly corroded near impossable. Quote
Susieque Posted February 16, 2012 Author Posted February 16, 2012 Thanks for all your help guys Our camper is old F reg, dunno what year that makes it - about '87 maybe?? And it's based on a Talbot chassis so I don't think those units will fit Steve.Rennie frequently surfs all the sites including the owners sites looking but just can't get a new unit We also need a new exhaust - the manifold is a bit cracked!!!!
