megawatt Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 (edited) Did a service on a mates 2002 ZX636 today. Everything went well until we put the last plug in , NGK CR9E. My mate is new to this, so he was screwing em in until the washer touched the head, tightening until the washer was crushed and then a slight nip up. He did not overtighten the previous 3 plugs. As he nipped it up, the spanner hit the frame??? He gently undid it and I retightened it. It went tighter and then went slack. I undid it all the way and then , oh my god!!Old plug that came outhttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0981.jpgNew plug.Came out eventually without removing cylinder head.http://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0984.jpghttp://i145.photobucket.com/albums/r240/megawattblade/IMAG0985.jpgNeither of us is cack handed and at no time was the plug overtightened. I read somewhere that this has happened to a few people recently. Either NGK have made a bad batch or they are crappy copies, bought frrom a reputable motor factors. BEWARE!!! Tango Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Oohhh.....that's nasty......glad you managed to get it out without having to remove the head mate..... No room for a torque wrench in there Alan?......just asking, not suggesting that the outcome would have been any different..... Quote
megawatt Posted October 19, 2012 Author Posted October 19, 2012 Only ever use a torque wrench when tightening cylinder heads Bob. Have heard on another Forum about eBay counterfeit NGKs shearing, but these were from a repuatable motor factors!!! Quote
Lumor_uk Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 You're allowed to name them as long as you have proof you bought them from them so name and shame our at least report it to them.maybe they are aware. Quote
davefly76 Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Why name and shame? Just take it back to where you got it from, it's hardly their fault if its been manufactured poorly. Quote
Lumor_uk Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 I don't know, to save it happening to some one else? Quote
Stu Posted October 19, 2012 Posted October 19, 2012 Naming and shaming the supplier won't solve anything! Quote

Have heard on another Forum about eBay counterfeit NGKs shearing, but these were from a repuatable motor factors!!! Its a long shot, but maybe some lowlife toerag returned a set of cheaper fake plugs to the shop for a refund but in a genuine box to save a couple of quid... have a close look at the plugs to make sure they are real, if they are, it well worth a strong letter to plug maker! Mrbarry Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 If they are fake it's not hard to get them into the supply chain before the store knows. Last year I saw a documentary about exactly this, it's so bad now there are fake hypodermic needles, bandages and even medication making their way into the chemist shops and on a few occasions into NHS and private hospitals Almost impossible to detect the differences too! (perhaps a bad thing perhaps a good that they so close to the real item ) Quote
Mrbarry Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 Oh and 2 years ago I wanted some sennheiser CX300 ear phones to replace the rubbish you get with an iPod, after a search on the net it seems 95% of the ones for sale, even from high street stores, are fake :/ Quote
mealexme Posted October 20, 2012 Posted October 20, 2012 there are a lot of people selling fake stuff recently. the guy at my local garage was saying how a lot of people have bought fake chain and sprockets recently Quote
Lumor_uk Posted October 22, 2012 Posted October 22, 2012 Naming and shaming the supplier won't solve anything! oh dear. Quote

Guest Posted November 4, 2012 Posted November 4, 2012 You can tell if its a fake by looking at the ngk on the plug, the genuine ones ngk is centred, and the washers don't jangle around on the plug, hope this makes sense.... Quote
