Or more specifically, how easy is it to mess it up? I have a haynes manual and the tools. It seems pretty straight forward but it gives it a 3 out of 5, which usually means is waaay too hard. Am I likely to tuin anything in the process? The bike can be off the road for about 2 weeks before the lands end trip, so I will have time to do all the maintenance needed then, so expect more posts in the pitstop haha

Dead easy to check, basic arithmetic to set. Depends alot if your head has shims or screw and locknut adjusters. If you can't follow it in the Haynes manual, gimme a bell and I'll talk you through it. Have you got feeler gauges?

uh....huh.

I thiink it has locknut. And I dont have the set yet, but its on my list along with a new gasket

Start by just checking it. It may not need adjusting. It's really easy to check with the Haynes helping, and the feeler gauges.

Never adjusted it myself, mine has shims :crybaby:

they are lock nuts on the bandit and the middle ones can be a pain in the arse to get to apparently

a pain in the ass to get too, sounds about right. Its done 22k though and as far as I know (1 other owner, got all the receipts from him) its never been checked even though its meant to be done every 12k. The haynes will deff help me out!

I remember doing my B6 clearances and didn't have any problems? I have screw and locknuts on the GSX engine. I use an 8mm ring spanner and a clock key, 3mm square, to hold the screw while I tighten the locknut. You can buy different size clock keys if yours are square drive ? Set the clearance with the screw onto the feeler gauge, tighten the locknut and recheck with feeler gauge. You may need to adjust to compensate.

cool :D Its just usually when I pick up tools to do a simple job, I almost write off the bike or kill myself haha. Failing to put the chain on properly, having it landing in the fast lane... glue on my heated grips slipping... accidently adjusting the hight of my headlights, thinking I was unscrewing the bolt holding the headlights in, but actually undooing the adjuster nuts... The list goes on, I shall be following haynes to the letter! Haha

At least you are having a go Alex. Double check everything, read the manual properly and if in doubt , ask. You still have my number don't you?
