fuel pump

this hasn't happened, but if the fuel pump stops working mid ride, will you get the same symptoms as running out of fuel? Ie coughing and spluttering before it stops? The reason I ask is I am getting a new alarm which has a button which disables the bike if you see someone riding off on it, but on the very rare occasion it (or similar products) has shut the bike accidentally whilst riding without warning.

I want it to do so in a way that will not suddenly cut the power so if I'm at high revs or mid corner and it cuts out, I wont loose control. If shutting off the fuel pump makes it splutter before dying, this would be ace, but im no mechanic

if the fuel pump stops it may well stop very quick as the pump is pushing fuel into the injectors no fuel in means its going to cut almost straight away i would of said

... Unless you have carbs in which case you may still have fuel flow to the carbs if you have a fullish tank.

alex has just treated himself to cbr600rr so will be injected i would of thought but yes if carbs should run on for 1/2 mile or so unlike injected that once pumps stops so does engine

I really can't see that been useful at all you would have to be pretty close for it to work and you could just jab them in the head

My Hannspree had an alarm... Got nicked!

My latest one is more expensive but has an Almax chain. So far a thief managed to polish the surface

The moral of the story is: Just because it screams, it wont stop someone taking it.

I know an alarm won't stop them. This alarm as well as being able to kill the bike by remote control, has a fob with an alarm so if the bike alarm goes off, the fob in your pocket also goes off alerting you to it straight away. From customers, the fob just about works from the other side of a shopping mall (which obviously has lots of interference from walls etc) so it has more of a range than you'd think. Loads of people have installed it without any issues though. Its like anything, whenever you start researching into it there is the odd horror story, like a set of well known tyres delaminating after a few hundred miles, or the gixxers frame being known to snap (look into it, there are loads of stories about that, probably from people stunting them too much though)

If the fuel pump idea won't work, I will just install it as normal and hope I don't die!

I'll ask around other forums with people who have this specific alarm first though and see if it is a common flaw because. The story I heard may well have been about a cheaper product

As stu said, dont bother with the alarm.

you cut the power, they drop the bike in the middle of the road, see you smiling and run back to 'kick your ed in' as your bike gets run over by trucks etc.

Alternatively, you remotely kill the bike, the thief falls off and gets run over and winds up in a wheelchair. He then employs a smartass lawyer to sue your arse off, and you get found guilty of deliberately endangering the life of the thief by remotely killing the bike and are liable for a big fat payout to the bike thief!

Maybe a bit far fetched, but with current legal system, nothing would surprise me if a bike thief sued the bikes owner becaue he fell off and hurt himself

Better to just let it go, hope its broken for parts, and use the insurance money to buy a new one

Unless they stop gently and pop it on it's side stand with zero damage, then come over to me to accept their due drubbing then I don't think I'd really want my bike back. I've seen many a stolen vehicle and have found myself getting really quite angry with the way tea leaves treat other people's property. I'd rather have the cash than a raped bike.

Mind you, I don't attach much sentiment to inanimate objects.

However, if you could hook up some spare fireworks Inside the petrol tank so you could remotely detonate and fry the thieves balls off, now that would be worth the law suits....

well, the lights flash and sirens go off before it cuts out so it gives them warning its going to happen. Also I'd rather get a bike back that had been dropped (they are going to stop before they get off) onto the crash bungs than ridden off into the distance. At least I could get home again that way

Unless they have the key they won't be riding it anywhere. The imobiliser will make sure of that.

Its more likely to be lifted into the back of a van and driven off to be stripped for parts.
