karldonteljames Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Evening all. This afternoon I went to my local helpful halfrauds, armed with a trade card to buy oil for my bike. I've only this bike for about two weeks. its done just over 500miles, its a Skyjet 125-26, yes, yes, I know it Chinese, and I know how people feel about these, but that is by the by, it will get my by until I take\pass my test.I looked in the bike book before I left home, and it said I need to use at least 15w-40 as they didn't have this in stock, I picked up 10w-40 and just to check, asked it was ok to use that, I spoke to some woman, who said "no, you have to use what it says in your book" I'm quietly confident this isn't the case and 10w-40 would have been fine, could someone please clarify this? Thanks.Karl Quote
Mr Fro Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Halfords bods aren't as technically savvy as they used to be (I used to run Halfords stores...)The 10W40 will be a smidge thinner when it's cold but shouldn't cause you any problems. Infact, if you check out the "performance" oils e.g. Castrol Edge, they will often specify a thinner oil for a particular application. Quote
Stu Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 10 40 would be fine they will specify a different oil for different markets/climates usually the hotter it is outside the higher the viscosity after all its chinese and wont last long enough anyway Quote

Dynamo_Delboy Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Ive got a wee question about oil.Im just about to service my bike and got ail the filters and plugs.Thing is. Ive got 1 litre or 10w 40 and about 3/4 of a litre of valvoline 10w 40. Can i just buy another 2 litres of castrol and mix or is it better to stick to the 1 kind.Probably a silly question but dont want to use 3 litre of castrol and the valvoline to make up to the 3.5 litres the book recommends if its gonna cause me any problems Quote
megawatt Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 I wouldn't have thought it would cause any problems as long as it's same grade and type of oil. ie 10W40 semi synth. Quote
Dynamo_Delboy Posted January 26, 2014 Posted January 26, 2014 Was thinking tht myself.Just thought id check 1st Quote
cockercas Posted January 27, 2014 Posted January 27, 2014 Look on the back and there will be some codes. SAE ??????????? If they match on both oils then you can mix them. If not don't bother. Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted January 28, 2014 Posted January 28, 2014 I wouldn't have thought it would cause any problems as long as it's same grade and type of oil. ie 10W40 semi synth. No issues at all with using different brands/makes of oil - It is the type which is important. Quote

Yer, dosn't matter if its castrol or shop own brand aslong as the codes on the back of the bottles match. Quote
