Other methods to bleed brakes?

Recommended Posts

Hey peoples..

As the title says!!!

This Honda 250cc i have been given, is all getting built up nicely.. after being dumped in my friends shed for years, un-used..

So after inspecting and installing the brakes, front and back.. I realised there was fluid in the resevoirs..

So i emptied them out and filled with fresh fluid.. Who knows how long the old fluid had been in there.

BUT.. upon attempting to bleed the front brake.. The caliper bleed nipple snapped off..

Its rusty as hell, but snapped off cleanly, so its still closing the hole in the calliper, but i cant un-lock it to bleed the brakes..

Which also means, reverse bleeding is out the window too..

I have been told to pump the lever a bit, and leave it over night, with the lever cable tied in, and resevoir cap off..

but this did sod all...

Been like it for a day and half now, and nothing...

Not even the slightest ounce of pressure in the lever :(

Ive never had to deal with snapped bleed nipples before, so im at an end..

I dont want to drill out the existing remainds of the nipple, i just want to bleed the brakes and be done with it, until next time..

any idea's??

I don't think you've got much choice Allan.....I don't think you'll be able to bleed it without slackening the bleed nipple...... :(

Suck all the air out so you created a vaccum in the caliper. Pinch the brake line with a brake line clamp, fill the hose above the clamp with fluid, and hold end of pipe in fluid. Release the clamp. Fluid will be sucked into the caliper. Some air will still be in the brake line but that will float out.

Yeah i think your right Bob..

I was just really trying to avoid it if possible..

All the drilling out and fitting a new one etc.

How do i get all the air out the calliper, if i cant remove the bleed nipple to get the air out?

Disconnect from the master cylinder and suck from there..

Works in theory.. No idea how you would achieve the vacuum in practice!!

I really like this!

Can you get a bolt remover? You know, one of those jobs with a reverse thread on it.

Cheers! Just invented it.. Its the same method they use for fixing chips in car windscreens. Suck all the air out, then allow the clear resin to be sucked into the Vacuum in the crack.

:stupid: It's got to come out. Give it a good soaking in a freeing agent first and use a extraction tool if its already sheared off. I would not go for heating the nipple free, your liable to damage the piston seals. Freezing might work or take it in and have the bleed nipple spark eroded out.

The Nipple has snapped off inside.. Like flush with the calliper itself.

So unfortunately a stud extrator is not an option..

Looks like im drilling it out :(

as for bleeding it do it from the banjo fill the caliper with brake fluid right up to the the banjo hole even if it means caliper is up the wrong way u want it so banjo hole is at the top then bleed hose through banjo bolt from the top s normall

Unless you get the nipple out and bleed it properly then there'll always be air in there. And calipers on eBay? Might be the easier option to bin it and fit a second hand caliper. You really can't take chances with your brakes!!

I have managed it this way plenty of times and you can get them just as good as having a bleed nipple. Bleed nipples are placed at the highest point on a caliper or where air gets trapped. If you imagine a bottle of water held in one position the spot with the air is where the bleed nipple would be.

So- have the system reservoir full and brake line all connected but caliper not mounted. Two people is easiest. Hold the caliper so that the Banjo Bolt (where hose attaches) is at the highest point (imagining a water bottle) and bleed through this bolt. Simples and works every time! Best method Hold down crack bolt, tighten, pump pedal and repeat!

Defs get this done if you aren't worried about having a snapped nipple!

Nice method!! - welcome to the forum :)

A reverse thread extractor should do the trick, drill down the center with left handed bit and use the extractor it shouldnt bw too tight as its the head of the nipple that locks it off, I use this method for rusy old grease nipples on crappy coaches and it works every time, half hour and you should have it out and new nipple in
