Ramsgate rideout and... Tunnels?

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone!

As you will no doubt be acutely aware, this year is the 70th anniversary of the opening of the Ramsgate tunnels by HRH The Duke of Kent...

In a nutshell, there is a huge network of interconnected tunnels underneath Ramsgate that were excavated and used during wartime. There’s about 3 miles of them all in all, ranging from a disused railway tunnel:

...To smaller side tunnels:

These have been officially closed since the late 40’s but some naughty people have found access over the years and have used them to pfaff about with cameras and such. ;-)

A small team has battled Thanet council and have been working hard to open them up as a tourist attraction http://www.ramsgatetunnels.org/index.html

The opening date is 1st June (Saturday). I’ll be going down as an ex-Thanet bod/contributor to the project and wondered if anyone else fancied the ride out and a look-see (I know a really good place for chips on the seafront!).

Cheers,

Fro

Unfortunately I'm not able to get there during the summer, but I would love to visit the tunnels.

I clearly remember riding the Tunnel Railway as a child - we used to get off the mainline train at Dumpton Park to ride the Tunnel into Ramsgate - which, given the tunnel railway closed in 1965, makes me feel a little old

  • 2 months later...

I am close by, and love the marina. Know the chippie too  Always fancied a gander in the tunnels too, but didn't know they were actually going to open them at last.

Unless I have to pop to Dorset i'll be there :D

If you are sick n tired of Motorway when you get to Faversham, turn off and go through Graveney>Seasalter then pop back on at Whitstabubble. Also the old Maidstone > Canterbury road is quite fun, again off at Fav' but cross over the Motorway head for Ashford, turn left at Crossroads Motors. If you havn't been down for a while, there is new carriageway and roundabouts alongside Manston!

If you want more info, just ask :)

To the max!

I'd probably nip off the M2 to Challock and up through Wingham. Seing as it's a Saturday I predict the 'Bubble and Herne Bog will be jammed up with tourists.

How fun does that look!

4 hours each way for me so may require some more thorough planning as a weekend away rather than a day trip :(

Is this a rideout down there on the 1st as the website seems to suggest the tunnels are being opened on Tuesday the 27th ?

Would love to visit them but feel what with the 26th being the bank holiday followed by the rest of the week a school holiday it might well be packed all that week.

Last time i went to Ramsgate i parked right outside the old Casino opposite a chipshop while i sat opposite munching my chips and feeding the segulls. Is there any decent bike parking around ?

Erm... Seems like they've changed the dates a bit!

1st is still a go-er for me anyhow. I'll give the bloke a buzz and see when they're letting people in to the tunnels proper.

As for parking, there's the casino a bit along the seafront - maybe a local bod can chip in as I've not been there for a couple of years...
