Guest Posted May 5, 2014 Posted May 5, 2014 So I'm hearing a tapping/ticking noise from my engine that gets faster and slower with engine speed... It's at 24k miles with some service history and lots of repairs along the way...I've ruled out oil level and I'm wondering, before it goes in to be looked at, is there anything I could look for?Any help appreciated. Phil. Quote
Ricky Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Check for this little bast*rd floating around your engine http://i1278.photobucket.com/albums/y513/coolman418/Mobile%20Uploads/image_zps1de6935e.jpg Quote
Stu Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Could be a number of things possibly cam chain or valve clearances Quote
Guest Posted May 6, 2014 Posted May 6, 2014 Putting it in the garage tomorrow to get diagnosed. Will update when I know more! Quote
Guest Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 So took it in, expecting to spend a couple of hundred to get it fixed...Technician looked over it, gave it a good few revs and listened to the engine etc and concluded that it sounds fine. POSSIBLY might need a bit of adjusting on the cam shaft tensioner? but he said it sounds fine and that to remember, I am sitting on an engine, I will hear noises My dad said his goldwing ticks "like a gooden" but it's normal. So good to have my mind put at rest. Fozzie Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Was about to say thats a cam chain tensioner tick you can most likely hear.Yamaha valves are usually very good on clearances, weird it's a specific manufacturer but I've heard they never need doing usually. If that tick becomes a rattle like it did on some of my old hondas then you have a problem Quote
Guest Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Was about to say thats a cam chain tensioner tick you can most likely hear.As in...and that's normal, or it's worn???When I asked, the Technitian said the cam chain tensioner isn't a problem that would cause engine damage. Is it normal to hear that or should an engine be silent of ticks??? Guest Posted May 7, 2014 Posted May 7, 2014 Ok so I think I've found something...Apparently, the stock cam chain tensioners from yamaha aren't as quiet and have gained yamaha a bit of notoriety in the ticking department... if that's true, there must be lots of owners out there will be familiar with what I'm talking about now and probably the reason why the mechanic didn't hear a problem... Mr Fro Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 Automatic tensioners don't have infinite adjustment. Mostly they have a toothed ratchet mechanism so tend to get a bit louder before they get quieter. You can undo them slightly then nip them back up to force the next click on the adjuster but you risk over tightening the chain. You could also fit a manual tensioner but that's arse ache. You'll soon enough get used to what it should sound like and know what's unusual. Guest Posted May 8, 2014 Posted May 8, 2014 I listen to music which gives engine and exhaust noise but drowns out the tick which is fine. The only time I hear it is when I have a passenger where I'll not be listening to music.I'm satisfied which what I've found but it doesn't mean that noise isn't annoying as hell... sounds like the engine is about to blow up but I guess it's just something I need to stop listening for.
