Hi there everyone :)


Got a little problem here so tough someone might help me you with this one as i have no clue what it could be.

So will start from the beginning.

Low sided my Ernie (er6n) :D Hit the curb with rear wheel which destroyed it, left hand handlebar bent in half too. rest of it just cosmetics.

The only thing bike desnt start anymore. Engine not damaged and everything else looks alright. So thought something might be wrong because bike spend long time on its side about 1 hour. Checked wires and they look intact. but to shore.

When i turn the key fuel pump goes on and everything else as it should but starter doesn't turn when i try to start it.


I tried everything i could from my knowledge and been told few other riders but nothing. So tough asking here might help.

check things like clutch switch and side stand switch and also see if its got a tip over sensor this might be stuck if you find one give it a bit of a tap

Can you bump start it? I'm assuming that the engine will actually turn over?

If that is OK.....try the things Stu suggested....plus make sure the kill switch isn't off/broken.....I take it that the battery fluid didn't leak out? Check battery, battery connections, starter relay and connections, starter motor connections and starter motor brushes not stuck..... :wink:

before you try anything else pull the plugs out


I missed the bit where it said it was on its side for an hour!!!


the cylinders could be full of oil and hydro locked

Thanks for suggestions. Will try all this over the Weekend. Ordered multi-tester so will check if all connections are alright too

Thats what i tough, that cylinders might be full. But then starter would work i think, Thats why i recon its something electrical.

No mate.....if the engine is locked the starter won't do anything. Pull the plugs as Stu suggested and see if the motor will spin on the starter.....just watch for stuff coming out of the plug holes....don't put your eyes over holes when spinning the motor....just in case..... :wink:

If its been upright for a while it should have drained!


Put it into neutral :wink:


Took a mate 2 weeks to realise his crashed bike wasn't starting as it was still in gear and the kill switch was on!

Its been a 2 weeks now. Kill switch was the first thing i have checked. Have learned from my mistake [sMILING FACE WITH OPEN MOUTH]

Pulling plugs is a problem. To take them out i would have to take fuel tank and air box out to get access to them. Silly design

What would i have to do after removing plugs ? If its hydrolocked

Just spin the engine until stuff stops coming out of the plug holes!


Top tip is put a rag over the top of the engine before you start turning it over or whatever is in there will fly everywhere. :-)

sump plug out..drain the oil.....crank case cover thingy off...socket on the end of the crank thingy, and turn it over by hand...carefully, as if theres tons of resistance and you force it can bend a con rod.

makes sure the plugs are out first

because its been on its side the oil can make its way in to the cylinders this would stop the bike turning over


the safest bet is to pull the plugs to ensure its not hydrolocked because if it is you could damage the motor and end up having to buy a new one!


It could just be an electrical problem but I wouldnt risk it!


plugs out make sure you can turn it over then look for the problem :wink:

It's only a couple of bolts, eight screws and a bit of magic with a screwdriver... http://tewjinhau.blogspot.com/2013/07/er6nf650r-tank-and-air-box-removal.html Nothing the OEM tool kit can't cope with. :-)


Honestly, I take the tanks off my bikes very regularly and it only takes a few minutes.

I might be wrong but I read it as he didn't see how he could spin it over with the tank and airbox off....not that he couldn't take the tank off ( hence my last post on how )

Aaaaah, I see. :-) I read it the other way!


Apologies if that's the case, I assumed the OP would be able to use the starter to crank the engine with the tank and such removed so must have been referring to the removal of bits. :-?


No offence to anyone if I got it all arse about face. :D

Take plugs out, put bike on paddock stand, put it into a high gear, turn back wheel...... :wink:

if you are worried about it being locked then that means the oil is now sitting above the piston rings one way to tell is to check oil level and see if its reading low then its got to have gone somewhere if its reading ok then chances are no oil above pistons,will the bike engine turn over if you put it into gear and gently try to push it?
