Chain Grease

Hi all,

Have just done a major back end strip and clean and need to replace the lubrication on my chain.

Can I use ordinary grease or do I need something special to put back on my chain ?

I seem to recall seeing some white grease in a packet when I've bought a chain before and wondered whether ordinary grease might ruin the o rings.

you dont want to be using grease out of a tub! it wont get to where it needs to be!

you want to get some chain lube of some sort or gear oil ...engine oil works too

Funny you should mention Gear oil, that's what I applied in the end tempting as the pot of grease looked. Having googled chain grease, a lot of people are saying don't use the white stuff either as it dries out and becomes gooey.

All feels good with the new tyre, cleaned and adjusted chain and the back end of the bike looking almost as good as it did when I picked it up 7 months ago.

at the moment I'm using Castrol chain lube. it seems to do the job the dude at the stor told me that it has wax in it as well though if not shaken properly it does feel rather sticky. has anyone else tried it? or should i move to something else?

I remember using 'chain guard' back in the old days ( ). You had to remove the chain, heat the grease until molten, dip the chain and then hang up while it cools before putting back on the bike.

I now use a Scotoilier - end of hassle.
