Azen Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Hi guys, Well I passed my test but I need help with my XJ600 while riding it and letting it warm up I have noticed that smoke is coming out of the exhaust, and pit sounds like it is "popping" which is the only way i can discribe it and there is a smell of oil to the smoke. How can i fix it and what do you guys think it is?oh the bike is 1992 xj600 diversion I have put new plugs in it but i don't know what to do and i don't want my new bike to be like chitty chitty bang bang Quote
Mr Fro Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Has it happened only once/a couple of times so far?It might just be the crap burning out of the exhaust from when you were running it up recently. I'd try taking it out for a decent length ride (20+ miles should do) and see how it goes. Quote
Azen Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 Hey Fro, since passing my test i have clocked up 100 miles and only passed yesterday afternoon I don't know why it is doing it, could it be build up in the engine? if so how could i get rid of it I don't really want to put a high octane fuel in it incase i blow up the engine lol though i don't understand where the smell of oil is coming from Quote
Mr Fro Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 If it's been standing a while you may have had a bit of seepage - my old ZXR smells terrible when I start it up after a lay up.Don't worry about sticking higher octane stuff in it, you'll likely get zero benefit, just run the tank as low as you dare and fill 'er up with normal fuel.Does the smoke/vapour disappear after it's been ridden for a bit? Also, I'm guessing it's white rather than blue... Quote
klingelton Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 white smoke = waterblue smoke = oilblack smoke = panic. Quote

Seepage is NEVER good Yeah the smoke dissapeares after a while it's mainly just when the choke is on which is why i thought it could be excess fuel or oil as the bloody stinks black smoke = panic. hahahahaha the only black smoke there will be is when im having a sacrifical burning of my Chinese bike!!! Chrissb6 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Hi congratulations on passing your test.Regarding your bike, its been cold lately so it could be condensation coming from the exhaust on start - warm up. If there are no signs of any leaks water or oil, l would suggest you take it out for a ride and get it fully warm up then check and report back. Hopefully it will only be condensation from the exhaust system. Quote

Thank you there is a bit of what i think is oil or it could just be a build up of crap from the previous owner (The bike is getting washed this weekend ((This could also explain the smell when the engine gets warmer )) I'm just weary of washing or getting water by the engine the bike needs a thorough clean though I may strip it all back and give it a full clean! Chrissb6 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 A good clean will do it a power of good. That popping noise your hearing is probably due to the cold start circuit - choke in operation whilst the engine is warming up. Chill out l'm sure everything will be ok Quote

eastanglianbiker Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 Sounds like normall warming up take the choke off a bit sooner if engine will allow it that way you will not get the carbon build up so much meaning less smoke and less smell Quote
Azen Posted May 1, 2015 Author Posted May 1, 2015 how would i get rid of a build up of carbon in the engine? Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 In the 'good old days', we used to get the engine running at about 1/3rd revs and drip brake fluid into the carb air intake.Once the smoke clears, it would run 'as sweet as a nut'!I believe you can now get modern 'de-coke' additives. Quote

Note to self find carb intake I'm proper thick when it comes to this kinda stuff Quote
Chrissb6 Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 how would i get rid of a build up of carbon in the engine?Get the bike cleaned up then go for a good long ride then see what you've got. Modern 4 stroke engine's are no known to carbon up. Lack of performance, smoky exhaust my first port of call would be to check the air filter. But as first said, go and take it for a good ride first then report back. Quote
rennie Posted May 1, 2015 Posted May 1, 2015 well done on the test! As said I'd put some fresh oil in it and get it properly warmbefore I worried. Quote
MissBex Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 Congrats on passing your test!My 2000 Hornet often has some smoke (White) when starting her up - especially if it's been cold or sat for a few days - and it's a bit stinky too. I like to try and let her warm up around 10 mins as that's what is says in the owners manual and you can hear the change in sound when it's good to go. The smoke stops when it gets warmed up. Probably just condensation or water in exhaust from washing it. Let it idle for a while and see if it clears up and take it for a good run and keep an eye on it and report back you findings. Quote
Zipster Posted May 2, 2015 Posted May 2, 2015 I used to have a 1990 pre divvy XJ600 - it was similar after sitting for a while and with the choke on. Take her for a good run with the choke off and see how she goes. Also be sure and join the XJRiders.com forum for plenty of advice from XJ current owners. Quote
