Because the country was doing just fine in 97 wasn't it....

I think a lot depends on where you are from.

We saw our industries decimated under tory rule.

It won't again for young people if they keep banging on about creating millions of 'apprenticeships' it's not an apprenticeship if its in office admin, or a fish and chip shop. It's slave labour.

If it's a skilled job then fair enough, most trades are, but it doesn't warrant an apprenticeship if you can learn to be competent in the job within a matter of weeks.

Yes correct about apprenticeships.

I did 4 year recognised trade. That was the minimum.

You went on from there.

Now they call everything an apprenticeship.

Or a degree.

Is there a degree in apprenticeshipness?

Can you imagine the conversations....

"I'm an apprentice"

"Oh, what is your trade"?

"I sort the office mail".

Like you said Slave Labour.

Anyway. ..

We will see tomorrow night or most probably Friday when someone has jumped into bed with somebody they shouldn't have.

Hope I'm wrong but I can see it being a coalition again.

I started my apprentiship in 06, for the whole of £80 a week. He was a good boss, one of the best brickys ive met.

interns. now that's slave labour. "come and do work for us for 6 months unpaid and we'll think about giving you a job."

then at the end of it. "oh look, we can get this other person in to do that job that you were doing for no money at all. sorry, you didn't get the job. bye."

amazing!

And your apprenticeship was in training racehorses!

But Fozz and Glozz - As an apprentice you can't expect to be on big money - I survived working in London on minimum wage when I was 18/19. Yes I had a crappy flat in the arse end of Dartford, yes my electricity key sometimes ran out and yes I'd occasionally be a week or so away from payday with £0 in the bank and not much in the cupboard.

To me, apprenticeships are in part about paying your dues - you must start at the bottom (which coincidentally a lot of school leavers don't understand). Apprentices' get paid, albeit not a huge amount, to learn from someone who is highly proficient in their field. The ultimate aim of this sort of scheme is that you will learn and earn faster than you would otherwise.

This is true, especially for beginners.

But I still think apprentices don't get much in the way of pay rises and should to give them a sense of progression. Usually as the company is worried about ones that fail as even small pay rises means if one drops out, it's a bigger loss.

My company got around this through promotions, in one company I've been: Trainee, Technician, Junior Designer, Associate designer, and Designer. It gave me a good incentive to work for my title, and I think many other companies could learn from this.

But when I started I found my own way around things, I offered a cheap repair service for bikes/cars etc. Pulled in the extra dosh I needed to make ends meet each month. Which is an experience I'll never forget as I try to never be wasteful with my wage even now. Whereas some of the university labour generation seem to waste what they have, then complain everyone else must be having it handed to them

i just want a party that realises that not giving nhs workers a decent rise is criminal...ive not had a cost of living rise in 4 years.... and the 1% i got this year equates to a £1 pay reduction overall....

Anyone else finding themselves between a rock and a hard place today?

Yup!

I can vote for...

The one that doesn't actually live or work in the constituency.

The one that represents the party I swore never to vote for again.

The one who I would consider, but doesn't stand a ruddy chance.

The one who supports legislation that would put my girlfriend out of work and ruin bikes for everyone.

The one who supports legislation that would boot a large number of my friends and colleagues out of the country.

Where's a ridiculous independent candidate when you need one to vote for?

Sorry, made a few mistakes in that post - fixed them now.

Funny you should say that - considering I voted in South Cambridgeshire, the closest candidate was Stevenage - a mere 32 miles away!

We should get something sorted to stand for 2020. :-)

The Conservative candidate in South East Cambs is a Yorkshirewoman who lives and works in London but happens to own a spare house in Cambridgeshire, and apparently this is sufficient grounds to stand. Can't see how she's supposed to know the first thing about representing the needs of Cambridgeshire. Something very wrong with a system that allows that.

I saw that - that's what got me looking at the addresses of the other candidates.

I think I might buy a few of those £5 houses 'op noth and stand there. They'd be a piece of piss to win over, I bet.

Mr fro

I do hope that was an attempt at humour.

Us northerners are not in the slightest a piece o piss to win over. Ask Thatcher

I shall start my campaign by answering that question directly. :-)

I was referring to the run down estates where indeed a house can be had for a fiver - All you'd have to do is get Phil and Kirsty in to give the place a revamp then offer reduced business rates in the local area to stimulate employment.

Bosh! Happier employed people with a nicer place to live with more cash in their pocket. Who wouldn't vote for that?

I shall dub this policy "The Thatcher f**ker-Upper Fixer".

Seemed to be a big turn out to vote today!

We had to queue for over half an hour!
