Guest Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 hello chaps of the motorbike world.i am working on inventing a safety instrumentation for motorbikesand i could do with knowing the temperature is your exhaust pipe if you happen to have a decent thermometer i have a theory that there will be uniform temperature characteristics based on engine size and stroke so if you could let me also know what kind of bike it is and if you have made any modifications to it as well that would be fantastic thanks Quote
DreamytimeEscorts Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 If I haven't been riding it, the exhaust is cold. If I have been riding it, it'll be hot. Quote
GaryJM Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 What do you think is the likelihood of any of us owning a thermometer that would be suitable for taking a reading from a hot exhaust? Quote
fq-craigus Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 If i remember ill get a temp in the morning when i get to work. How ever, most of us have aftermarket cans and a lot are carbon that dont stay too hot its only really the link pipe that does and that is out the way enough Quote
Mr Fro Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 What do you think is the likelihood of any of us owning a thermometer that would be suitable for taking a reading from a hot exhaust?I have one. What is the nature of the "safety instrumentation"?Regards,Rev Dr Fro Quote

Mr Fro Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 You know it. I found mine has a laser pointer the other week and annoyed loads of people. And a passing cat. Quote
fq-craigus Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Yeah the brill, i use mine more in the winter to highlight how cold the workshop is and our workshop dog is scared of it Quote
Mr Fro Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 ...our workshop dog is scared of itI'm not surprised if you try taking it's temperature with that bloody great thing! Quote
Tankbag Posted July 6, 2015 Posted July 6, 2015 Who cares i get to use a thermometer I use a laser one too, tarmac temp, air temp, various parts of the bike temp Quote
RantMachine Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 i have a theory that there will be uniform temperature characteristics based on engine size and stroke Please do elaborate Quote
Mr Fro Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Please do elaborate Hot at the top, not so much further down? Quote
RantMachine Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Please do elaborate Hot at the top, not so much further down? So, you're saying it's the opposite of a butterface? Quote
Whitey1984 Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 i am working on inventing a safety instrumentation for motorbikes I'm interested in what this could be? i already have a safety device, it's called my brain and i use it to tell me to not touch the exhaust after I've been for a ride. Worked for me so far!! Quote
Mr Fro Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 So, you're saying it's the opposite of a butterface? Yeah, a facerbutt... Which is something I believe is a "special practice" in Germany. Quote
Bogof Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 So, you're saying it's the opposite of a butterface? Yeah, a facerbutt... Which is something I believe is a "special practice" in Germany. Even more special in Thailand. Apparently. Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Hot enough to melt a hole in the sleeve of my textile jacket! But, strange as it may seem, it was cold to the touch before I started it up this morning Quote
Guest Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 (edited) i have decided to visit a major bike show instead of asking on online it will be a more efficient use of my time I will be visiting the Classic Motorcycle Festival at Donington Park in April thanks for all your help Edited July 7, 2015 by Anonymous Quote
Grumpy Old Git Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 So...You are talking about a thermocouple device attached to the exhaust which will convert the heat into electricity? You could strap a coiled tube containing water with a small turbine inside however, after a short while, the temperature of the fluid will stabalise and there will be no more flow.A better solution would be fitting a wind generator to the rear rack / pillion seat or, better yet, photovolaic (solar) panels.Hang on though, what about attaching a dynamo to the bike or, maybe an alternator? Mr Fro Posted July 7, 2015 Posted July 7, 2015 Emmers - top tip; give up the smoke and mirrors stuff. There's a wealth of very experienced engineers, inventors, bike experts and people with genuine PhDs who would be happy to lend you a hand (or idea). If you have IP that isn't already owned by BMW, Honda, that French firm or me then fair play but otherwise, try being a little more open - you might get a better response. Quote
