what temperature is your exhaust pipe

hello chaps of the motorbike world.

i am working on inventing a safety instrumentation for motorbikes

and i could do with knowing the temperature is your exhaust pipe

if you happen to have a decent thermometer

i have a theory that there will be uniform temperature characteristics based on engine size and stroke

so if you could let me also know what kind of bike it is

and if you have made any modifications to it as well

that would be fantastic

thanks

If i remember ill get a temp in the morning when i get to work.

How ever, most of us have aftermarket cans and a lot are carbon that dont stay too hot its only really the link pipe that does and that is out the way enough

What do you think is the likelihood of any of us owning a thermometer that would be suitable for taking a reading from a hot exhaust?

I have one. :-)

What is the nature of the "safety instrumentation"?

I'm interested in what this could be? i already have a safety device, it's called my brain and i use it to tell me to not touch the exhaust after I've been for a ride. Worked for me so far!!

So, you're saying it's the opposite of a butterface?

Yeah, a facerbutt... Which is something I believe is a "special practice" in Germany.

Even more special in Thailand. Apparently.

it will be a more efficient use of my time

I will be visiting the Classic Motorcycle Festival at Donington Park in April

thanks for all your help

So...

You are talking about a thermocouple device attached to the exhaust which will convert the heat into electricity?

You could strap a coiled tube containing water with a small turbine inside however, after a short while, the temperature of the fluid will stabalise and there will be no more flow.

A better solution would be fitting a wind generator to the rear rack / pillion seat or, better yet, photovolaic (solar) panels.

Hang on though, what about attaching a dynamo to the bike or, maybe an alternator?

Emmers - top tip; give up the smoke and mirrors stuff. There's a wealth of very experienced engineers, inventors, bike experts and people with genuine PhDs who would be happy to lend you a hand (or idea). If you have IP that isn't already owned by BMW, Honda, that French firm or me then fair play but otherwise, try being a little more open - you might get a better response.
