Gin Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I have a Pi sitting at home that I really should do something with! Just never worked out what I want from it... Quote
Arwen Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I accidentally bought two Pi's when they were first released. I ordered one each from both companies... I messed around with one of them for a bit, using it to stream movies and such, but lost interest. Sold the other one around a year later. I see they have now brought out an even smaller Pi?! Quote
RantMachine Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I have a pi at home. Well, half of one. Putting the filling in when I get back from work Quote
Joeman Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I have a Pi sitting at home that I really should do something with! Just never worked out what I want from it... Haha, same. I have one wired into my router at home. Had big plans for it but never got anything started. It's been "soak testing" for the last year! This new little PI zero is a lot smaller. I'm thinking it would make a nice data logger for bikes. Quote
Glorian Posted November 26, 2015 Author Posted November 26, 2015 I have a pi at home. Well, half of one. Putting the filling in when I get back from work Was waiting for this.. I'd like to work with a pi, see some cool stuff online of people making emulators into old nes/snes cases with full library of games. Then i realise. I have no talent for this. Quote
Glorian Posted November 26, 2015 Author Posted November 26, 2015 Gonna buy this paydayhttp://www.amazon.co.uk/registry/wishlist/85Z03KSFJR51(hope link works)Make myself an emulator!! Quote
Gin Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 That would be cool! I was originally thinking about effectively using it as a ECU monitor and editer for our universities race car but just got too caught up in other bits. Now not sure what to do with it.. I'm sure once I move and settle into this new job more I'll have time to look at it again! Then I will be asking you all for tips and ideas no doubt Quote
MrWhippy Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 well being new here i have to keep you all happy until you find out im really just a withered grumpy old man I'm "new" (Presuming you came from the GBB but I don't recognise the username!) I only started posting the other day. The fact i've had an account since 2011 is just a hoax! Nope, I just found the board via google a few days ago. Quote
Fozzie Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Free computer with Raspberry Pi magazine today!!Must be a world's first right? (Free computer with magazine) If you remember my last garage project I had the leisure batteries.I used a raspberry pi as a power usage monitor, and switching device to flick between batteries when they reached 20% capacity. It was a good idea but as I'd used those LED strips and then focused on wiring them in a way to minimise losses I was getting 30+ hours for 80% discharge anyway so it seemed overkill. Snazzy piece of kit though, it's very flexible. I saw one being used to monitor a house's power consumption. Quote

I'm sure once I move and settle into this new job more I'll have time to look at it again! Then I will be asking you all for tips and ideas no doubt I was going to have a go at making a power commander-like device. Intercept the injector signals, crank and throttle position sensor and adjust the injector time just as a power commander does. That's first step toward a full ECU.First step was going to be to just gather the data, effectively piggybacking the bikes ECU to determine the existing maps, then build the circuitry to control the injectors. Gin Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Oohhh that sounds cool Joe! If you ever do, please make a thread so we can follow it! I'd be dead keen to learn There wasn't enough electronics in my degree, so I've managed to get one of the electronic engineers to give me lessons each week in the electronic lab and I feel like such a eager student again, it's great! sparky Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 so this thread is old people reminiscing, and young people asking if we remember the wheel being invented? I've not got the time to read it all, my varifocals need upgrading before I start doing that...anyone remember the first mechwarrior? Now that needed some imagination. Quote

Arwen Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I love hearing about people experiences of old IT technology. We have came a long way from 30 years ago (Windows turned 30 this year) and a super long way from 50 years ago.I love to think where we will be in the next 30 years. With the hope that I can see and be a part of the evolution Quote
sparky Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I don't think windows is 30. Microsoft maybe.. I remember DOS 3.1. no GUI, and no mouse. If you didn't know the commands you were stuffed. you didn't even get a manual to help out. and the internet wasn't invented for another 10 years. (not properly anyhow.) Quote
sparky Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 thanks for the link. yes, windows would appear to be 30. my bad.although, in my defence, it was hardly used by anyone. the PC was a business tool that cost in the region of 1500 quid. Quote
Tango Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 The first computer I used.......PDP11, with core memory........ But then the Motorola 6800 was kicking about and the Intel 8080 had just arrived on the scene.......so they kinda took over at work. Quote

Matt Strange Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 I have to live with the shame that the first pc I bought was from Time computers. It was advertised as having "AGP Graphics", yeah it did but integrated via the motherboard, no physical AGP slot (precursor to pci-e). Still, it made me the pc geek I am today! Quote

It was a re-release, loved it but it didn't take off. Quote
Guest Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 A few weeks ago I built my first pc... I'm dead happy with it! Since my xbox 360 is so old and is pretty crappy... I decided to join the PC master race I obviously tidied up the cables, but here are some pictures.http://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/raabie999/2015-11-13%2018.37.04.jpghttp://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/raabie999/2015-11-13%2017.14.55.jpghttp://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/raabie999/2015-11-13%2018.37.10.jpghttp://i713.photobucket.com/albums/ww135/raabie999/2015-11-13%2020.19.48.jpg Quote
Arwen Posted November 26, 2015 Posted November 26, 2015 Very nice, what graphic card did you go for?I finally got around to replacing my ageing pc at the begining of the year - I skimped a bit and didn't buy the Arctic Freezer CPU cooler I wanted, but actually finding the stock Intel fan to keep the temp down no problem! Shocked is an understatement. Quote
