The Bike Dork Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Simpleton nube question. I bought a triumph Street triple (new) this summer as my first bike. Do I need to oil the chain from time to time as part of general maintenance? Quote
MR_W Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Yes. If not done regularly it can cause the chain to stretch and excessive wear.I always clean mine before re-applying. Quote

Hoggs Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 OOH the other half bought one of these, they're great for a quick clean!http://ecx.images-amazon.com/images/I/41k21xmHT3L._SY300_.jpgWhack the bike up on a stand and rotate the rear wheel while holding. It's quite easy to accidentally flick dirt in your face if you're a bit overexcited but does a great job of quickly getting a lot of the rubbish off before re-oiling. I just use WD40 Chain lube because we have some I'm not sure how "good" it is, but does the job for me. Quote
CrookzV4 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 I just spent a good half hour doing mine yesterday as I finally got a paddock stand. I used brake cleaner (some will say not to - it's what my mechanic friend recommends), a brush like the one above and a rag to get rid of the grime. Put some card behind the area I was spraying to prevent it from going anywhere else. Once clean, use chain lube and cover the length of the chain. It is now a shiny gold as opposed to black long overdue. Quote
Six30 Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Every 200 to 300 miles I'll do mine , clean then re lube. Quote
Paul-Kent Posted December 29, 2015 Posted December 29, 2015 Every 200 to 300 miles I'll do mine , clean then re lube. Blimey, I do more miles than that in a day some times.Perhaps I should reassess my oiling intervals Quote
