Hi all,

Learnt how to bump start a bike this morning in a pinch.

I went to start the bike as normal, it turned over, started then died.

After that, I tried to start it again, it clicked and then all the electrics went. No lights, no netrual

Haven't had chance to test with a multimeter etc. as I was running late for work. Managed to bump start it with some persuasion.

When riding, the lights aren't as bright, the indicators don't really flash, just glow and the horn sounds quite muted.

One weirdness is that the headlight got brighter with the brake depressed (brake light on)

It's still stone dead when I turned it off as I got to work. When it turned it back on, the lights glowed for a second or two but that's it.

I'm guessing it's either a dead battery, short, bad earth or all 3.

Are there any things to check in particular? It's a 2005 electric start only model. No problems up until now. It was caught in a hailstorm yesterday which may mean it's just wet and a bit sad.

Time to buy a multi-meter, can only suggest charging the battery ,see if it holds a charge, then maybe do a battery leak down test if it doesn't hold a charge when connected to the bike.

:stupid:

Yeah, sounds like your battery is stuffed. If it was anything else it's unlikely that it would have even bump started.....

So, I feel like a lemon for not troubleshooting earlier but I had to get to work and my logic was: no electricity from battery, but spark plug has it's own coil on the generator (as far as I'm aware) therefore, if generator spinning, it should run.

Found out what it was after about a minute of troubleshooting, the battery +ve lead had worked it's way slightly loose...it's fine now...

Well we all have those moments! Glad you got it sorted (and it was a free fix! best of all the fixes!)

Annoyingly, it happened again this morning.

Started it first time, and it was fine. Managed to stall it, then it was dead as a doorknob until I bumped it, at which point it was fine and it has been since.

Any ideas what to check? Battery connections seem okay but I'm going to cover them in dieletric grease when I get an oppurtunity

Not having a battery connected or poorly connected can knacker the charging system .. get it running and test it as above with multi meter etc .. check electrolyte levels in battery .. cold weather will sap a poorly battery . Give it enough oomph for one attempt but until its charged enough its no way hose.
