RantMachine Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Because what could possibly go wrong OOOOH NEW THREAD IDEASeeing as the idiot challenge failed we need a forum rat bike thread instead! It's only a matter of time before this turns into one Hoggs needs a handicap because she has a head start. So does Glorian but he already has a handicap. Quote
Glorian Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Coming from the guy who's fairly new bike is making funny noises Quote
RantMachine Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Kawasaki said it was perfectly normal and I'm just paranoid after owning Chinese AND German bikes. They even said it actually sounds pretty awesome with its new can, so nerr nerr Quote
Westbeef Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 Does anyone wanna buy this off me? eyy You like a good project don't you? Quote
Westbeef Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 So I've rang up 2 garages - one flat out refused and the other said it's probably cheapest to whack a new engine in Quote
Gin Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Look on ebay for a breakers yard, they will likely have one somewhere! Quote
RantMachine Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Well they're having a bloody laugh Don't suppose one of them was Rick Stringer motorcycles and the other was Cambridge Motorcycles, by any chance? Quote
Westbeef Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 Well they're having a bloody laugh Don't suppose one of them was Rick Stringer motorcycles and the other was Cambridge Motorcycles, by any chance? To be fair to the one who refused they were honest and said it needed to be welded, but it needs the grade matching and and is quite specialised. Quote
Westbeef Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 Well the price of a new case is cheaper than a second hand engine so I won't be doing that. Still £250, if this is how much I'm looking at or similar for welding then I have nothing to lose at least attempting a bodge. Quote
Joeman Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Bodge it!! Loads of JB weld and a drain valve. Quote

MOBILE WELDER MAN! http://manchestermobilewelding.co.uk/ (I'm being humours and helpful!!! worth a phone call at least?) Quote
JRH Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 WestbeefBodge it!! Loads of JB weld and a drain valve. And a drip tray to go under the bike Quote

Guest Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Have you met Beefy?I thought beefy would try anything as cross dressing was last thing i saw him try Quote
Westbeef Posted December 7, 2016 Author Posted December 7, 2016 Have you met Beefy?I thought beefy would try anything as cross dressing was last thing i saw him try I'm always open to suggestions, but welding is beyond my skill set in the art of breaking shit. Quote
Guest Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 If i can do it, im sure you're more than capable Quote
RantMachine Posted December 7, 2016 Posted December 7, 2016 Until today I was unaware of the link between cross-dressing and welding. The more you know! Quote
Guest Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 This won't be welded. I agree with Joe, it needs a bodge. If it were me...I would get all that oil out and drill a hole in the sump plug. In that hole I would make a thread. To that thread I would place a smaller bolt.Once my bolt inside a bolt is good, I would slap a load of JB weld on the inside of the sump plug hole, and bond the sump plug to the sump with JB weld and fill that crack in. Once dry and sanded down, you'll have a permanent repair with a removable bolt to keep doing oil changes. Quote
Guest Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Yep, need to be careful, but slapping JB weld on the outside of the crack won't achieve much and will likely crack off with temperature changes.Since we're talking bodge jobs, loads of JB weld inside to bond the drain plug would do it. Chemical metal would crack off... JB should hold in my experience. Quote

It's going to screw into the sump, be JB welded into position, and have the correct thread to take a standard plug. Similar to what you suggest but It's just a little easier on my side. Going to make it out of Mild steel and get it zinc plated so it wont corrode either. Quote
RantMachine Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Awesome, glad to hear you've found a solution that works for you Quote
Westbeef Posted December 8, 2016 Author Posted December 8, 2016 Awesome, glad to hear you've found a solution that works for you Aye, it's at least worth attempting this, the price of getting the case off and welded and put back again isn't much less than buying a new case and getting it fitted, I don't have too much to lose giving this a go. Quote
Guest Posted December 8, 2016 Posted December 8, 2016 Good plan.A lot of people are always really worried if something isn't done the orthodox way but this sounds like a fine idea which I'm sure will work really well and save you money on trying to get someone to weld it, which I don't think would be as permanent as JB weld would be on cast ally. Westbeef Posted December 20, 2016 Author Posted December 20, 2016 Heres my fitting made all ready to go in, probably Friday as its the only day I'm going to be home with some daylight left. http://i.imgur.com/vwOcVtm.jpg Quote
Hoggs Posted December 20, 2016 Posted December 20, 2016 Out of context that post is hilarious and terrifying. Quote
