Rodders Posted October 6, 2017 Author Posted October 6, 2017 This is what I've got in mind for my shed, so I can get the bike in without needing the roof to be high enough for me to walk in.https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C8PPn6Dot_I Quote
Bender Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 There are 8ftx8ft shipping containers on eBay for under 1k, while it may be expensive to start with it will hold most of that value and is secure. Quote

Sure would be, but I need something more aesthetically pleasing for the neighbours. Here's a photo of the side of my house (on the left). The grass strip and flower bed has been replaced with gravel along the entire length. Our garage and driveway is at the rear, you can see our garage roof slightly obscured by the satellite dish!http://therodriguezfamily.co.uk/side_of_house.pngThe strip doesn't look very wide, but I can park my VW Transporter fully on it with the wing mirror touching the wall. So, fitting a motorbike shed will be fine.A wooden lean-to type structure towards the rear end near our driveway is probably the most sensible idea for position and appearances. For example:http://www.buyshedsdirect.co.uk/images/800/800/150623094840/productimages/bsd/garden-storage/double-bin-store-2.jpg Quote
Bender Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Yea I could see how that would stick out, although I have a friend who put a 10x8 at the side of his and the neighbours don't appear to have complained.Could you not have something in the top corner of the garden and have access via the drive, I can see how security is going to be an issue along the side.I'm in the middle of putting a shed up for mine, well it started out a shed I think I got a bit carried away. Rodders Posted October 6, 2017 Author Posted October 6, 2017 Cheers Bender for taking time to reply.Problem with access to the garden from the drive, is that we usually have 2 cars blocking the fence, and I'm not gonna mess with the brick wall.I'll build something. It'll be great. And you'll all want one for yourselves. Maybe. Quote
Bender Posted October 6, 2017 Posted October 6, 2017 Sir I like your attitude, good luck with the build, I will post pics of mine when it's done if I'm not buried under it by the Mrs. Quote
Rodders Posted October 26, 2017 Author Posted October 26, 2017 I'm no further forward with the shed, though my license is getting closer as I've got MOD1 & MOD2 booked for November.I've found these dolly trucks which look like an ideal approach - I just need to attach a front wheel chock and then create some kind of guide rails and mechanism to hold the truck still while I load the bike on. Should make the build less complicated. This wheel chock is what I'm basing my dimensions and design on:https://www.demon-tweeks.co.uk/motorcycle/front-stands/warrior-motorcycle-wheel-chock-fits-17-21-wheels-2This dolly truck would fit the chock comfortably:https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/cdt5-dolly-truck-platform/This one solves the 'hold-it-still' problem, and can be adjusted to fit the chock:https://www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-cumb1-universal-mobile-base/They might be a little bit high which would make loading more tricky and stability reduced. So, I may consider custom building one with my new welding skills.....yet to acquire! Quote
Arwen Posted October 26, 2017 Posted October 26, 2017 Ok, I noticed these in B&Q... expensive and not able to swing out the way like you want. But would look fine against your house (in my opinion) and are minimum effort to build! http://www.diy.com/departments/outdoor-garden/garden-storage/bike-storage/cat2920307.cat Quote

I've been advised that metal isn't a good idea due to the poor ventilation. Actually, I think the material is less relevant than the amount of ventilation. And they are crazy expensive. But I'm definitely using them as inspiration. I quite like a DIY project, this will be one of the biggest yet though and I've not got proven skills that I can put to use so it'll be interesting to say the least. Quote
Chrissb6 Posted October 27, 2017 Posted October 27, 2017 Same go's when you tell them it made of wood, have a nightmare every year to convince them mine safe and secure. Quote
Rodders Posted October 31, 2017 Author Posted October 31, 2017 I'm going to start sketching out plans, and designing the shed. I could really use some measurements from 'typical' bikes. I'm strongly considering a Suzuki Bandit as a first bike to get used to riding without worrying about it staying immaculate, and still considering a new Street Twin as a special treat for myself just because.I'd be really grateful if anyone would measure up their bike:Longest length - e.g. front of wheel to end of rear light clusterHighest height - e.g. floor to top of screen or top boxWidest width - e.g. handlebars inc. mirrors A few different bikes would be good. I want my shed to be versatile just in case I change the bike in future.Muchos Gracias Quote
megawatt Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 If you end up with a cruiser, go 8' long and 3' wide, weight 300kg. I'll measure Fazer 1000 later. Quote

Bender Posted October 31, 2017 Posted October 31, 2017 In the pursuit of cheapness and easiness just make a lean too shed have one end open up fully so you can ride/ paddle it in, have another door on the side you can open to get on/off the bike, security is never going to be a strong point on the side of the house but you can run a camera or a wire to your house alarm on the tamper circuit so it will go off anytime it is opened, have a switch so you can close the circuit to disarm the tamper to the shed.If you wanted to make it easier to get out you could have the other end hinged and you could drive it straight out. your already going to have to make the shed you just need some more hinges and locks, you could lock the end ones from inside with bolts or locks and just have the side one with the exterior lock, if you can conceal the hinges it would look like a lean to shed with a side door.
