Glasgow (Shieldhall) - worst place to sit the bike test.

So, is it the routes, the instructors, the local bike schools? Why so low?

Makes me feel a bit better I took 2 goes to pass the Mod 2 there. My fault, I sailed past a primary school at 30 mph, not realising the 20mph was all the time. It was the summer holidays.

Surprised by this! My instructors were always banging on about checking the 20mph signs so maybe I just got lucky with them and checked out of habit.

Got 1 minor on my mod2 there.

It was a road I know well, Dean Park Rd into Cockelsloan. The Renfrew High 20mph is only when lights flash. The Arkelston Primary, a few hundred yards away, is all year round. I still kick myself for that moment of inattention.

This got me googling mandatory vs advisory speed limits. I thought only round red signs were mandatory and rectangular ones before bends, at flashing 20mph signs etc were advisory. Anyway, what I've just learned is that these on the motorway aren't mandatory - woohoo! The bottom one.

It is mandatory if there is a standard 20 mph speed limit sign. It is not mandatory if the sign includes lights to flash and a warning the 20 mph speed limit only applies when the lights flash. What caught me out was at the mandatory limit, on one approach only, there is another sign which flashes up your speed (or should do).

During my test we approached the limit from that side and my brain told me that since the first limit did not apply as no lights were flashing, since the speed sign did not react at the second limit, I was OK to keep going there at 30 mph as well.

May not be mandatory But if an incident happens and your excess speed is contributory then questions may ve asked

And on a personal note

That reduced speed limit may be in place as im working on the Hard Shoulder or within a closed lane recovering a vehicle so why not just ease off and take that few extra minutes on your journey .You be suprised at how much we appreciate that simple gesture.
