re waterproofing

I've got a Richa one - piece rain suit that used to be completely waterproof. I've had it about five years and nothing appears to have perished or worn out but last time I wore it there was some leakage. Does anybody know of a re - waterproofing product that actually works ? I tried Nikwax Tech wash years ago and I wasn't impressed.

You can get spray on stuff from outdoor shops. Might be worth a try.

Sprays aren't waterproofing. All they do is form a surface layer that rainwater tends to bead on.. And drip away. Ideal for walking gear or tents. Bike clothing is something quite different, where the rain water is hitting you at much higher speeds and can force its way through due to pressure. You need a physical barrier, if water is getting through then that barrier has failed and needs to be repaired. Or covered over. If that's not possible then all you can do is replace.

I've used Nikwax before with decent success, did you have the two-part cleaner and waterproof washing kit?

I have had the same experience with waterproof sprays, they work far better on static items like tents than on bike stuff and I am sure, as said it due to the speed on the bike and water finds the gaps at all angles.

Thanks so far, there's a lot of different product out there but most are rather expensive and I'm a bit sceptical as to how well they work . Shame because the suit is in good nick otherwise and I was hoping to get a bit more life out of it . Maybe I'll soak it in WD40 , it it doesn't keep out the rain at least it might repel the Scottish midges!

I think 5 years is pretty good going and I would not expect to be able to see the original waterproofing deteriorate, just the effect. Spada do some excellent waterproofs.
