Likely work needed on scooter that's been unused and in garage for 15 years?

My 16 year old son is looking to get a scooter, but since he'll probably want to upgrade as soon as he's 17 I've advised getting a cheap second-hand one. A work colleague has an old Y reg Gilera Runner that has 1600 miles on the clock, and has been sat in his garage unused for 15 years. I offered to pick it up and take it to a garage, and if it can be got running and MOTd affordably, to give him £100 for it, if it can't then I'll just scrap it.

What kind of work would likely be needed it on it? I'm guessing it would at least need a new battery and a fluids change.

Hey welcome, I've got a Gillera runner that's been sat in a garage for a few year, and im thinking exactly the same!!

I've not had a chance to look yet but I was planning to do an oil change new battery clean the air filter replace the two stroke oil and petrol. Remove the sparkplug squirt in some lube and gently hand crank it over to make sure it's well lubricated before replacing the plug and starting her up!

If it runs great, if not then it's diagnostics time...

Think I might also need to do the fork seals too and not sure if the conditions of the tyres - they might have gone hard/cracked.

Great fun bikes so definitely worth a punt.

Add brake and fuel lines to your check list - 15 years is a long time and they will likely be in some state of decay.

And certainly replace the tyres. They might look fine but tyres age and anything that old will need replacing.

2 stroke engine crank seals dont appreciate being sat for a long time.Can cause trouble starting, poor running and seizing due to weak mixture.

Also depending on where the piston stopped, there may have been a direct route for condensation into the cylinder and crank below.Obviously bad news for liner (if cast iron) and bearings.

Carb will need stripping and cleaning out.Fuel will have evaporated and left behind a gungy mess.

Check fuel tank for rust inside.

Considering its low value,i'd do the checks as previously suggested and try starting it.

I'd make sure it runs and moves before investing too much in it.
