painter Posted September 10, 2018 Posted September 10, 2018 Hey guys,I've just got a £400 Honda CD250U as a fixer-upper, and I'm pretty happy with it so far, although it's now got a weird noise that seems to be getting worse. It sounds like a wire or something metallic tapping on the underneath of the fuel tank intermittently mostly when accelerating, although I can't see loose wire, and it's not regular enough to be something loose. It's like a cross between a tapping, scraping and clicking if that makes any sense? Also can hear it if I take a speed bump a bit too liberally, as the bike's coming back down? To the untrained ear (this is my first bike!) it seems like it's when the bike pulls away and bits might be moving about and scraping maybe? It's kind of hard to describe, just wondering if someone has had something like this before...Cheers! mikestrivens Posted September 10, 2018 Posted September 10, 2018 Hello and welcome. Perhaps it's the float in the tank that has come loose and is tapping the inside of the tank. But only a wild guess. Quote
Guest Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 Anti-slosh baffle round the filler neck come loose? I had this happen on a Guzzi tank. Only way to repair is to cut the tank open and weld. Specialist job. Make sure by draining tank, take it off, remove all the removables and then give it a good shake. If there's anything loose in there you will hear it rattling about. Quote
Mr Fro Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 I had an odd noise on the ZXR fuel tank - it turned out to be a clearance thing. I had all sorts of odd noises - clunks, screeches - all sorts. It turned out the mounts were past their best - bosched on some new ones and job done. Quote
fastbob Posted September 11, 2018 Posted September 11, 2018 (edited) We'll I don't want to spoil your day but I would be turning my attention to the camchain by now . As I recall the valve cover is only secured by two bolts and it has a reusable seal so you could whip it off and rotate the engine with a ratchet to see if the camchain is uniformly tensioned . Do make sure you turn it the right way and take the plugs out to make it easier . If the camcain goes slack and then goes tight again with a click this could explain your noise .
