kevin g Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 Hi - would anyone have a simple guide or video on how to change or clean the brake pads on a 2018 Kawasaki Z650. I only ask as I keep reading different information ie you should or shouldn’t use copper grease, you should remove the brake fluid reservoir cap, there is a clip to remove or it’s actually a bolt, you should slightly depress the brake lever or you should never depress the brake lever ! Any definitive help would be appreciated - thanks in advance. Quote
kevin g Posted March 25, 2020 Author Posted March 25, 2020 Tried YouTube - that’s why I’m so confused Quote
Mr Fro Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 I'm guessing it's probably the original brake fluid so could probably use a change anyway so whip it out before you start the job - it's one less thing to worry about. It depends what pads you get as to whether you need copper grease - some have an anti squeal shim built it in which case you won't need it. You only need the slightest smear of it if you do put it on.Don"t know about clips and bolts (guessing on the caliper) but get amongst it and you'll find out! Pads aren't hard to do.Oh, and leave the lever alone until you refill the system. Quote
fastbob Posted March 25, 2020 Posted March 25, 2020 To get the pads out , you remove this pin by means of a spanner or preferably a small socket on the protruding hexagonal portion . Take care because it will be tight to begin with due to the blue locking compound used to secure it . If possible, loosen the pins off with the callipers still attached to the bike then remove them to complete the job . Regarding the other stuff , there's probably no need to remove the master cylinder cover because they are designed to allow some expansion . Remember to lever the pistons in a bit using the old pads and a crowbar so that the new ones will clear the disks and never touch the lever when the callipers are off the bike. A smear of copper grease on the back of the pads is alleged to prevent squealing so go ahead . Quote
