sam11189 Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Hello folks new on here, recently i tried to set the SAG on my front forks, i have 40mm free sag and 60 mm rider sag. The bike rides horrible, very harsh, Preload adjuster maxed out. Recently i changed fork seals and oil, basically there's no room for adjustment left. anyone hv any ideas to get my sag down to factory spec?thanks Quote
Stu Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Hi and welcome to the forumSounds like you need new springs for your weight and not the little Japanese riders these was designed around! If you have a harsh ride it's more than likely down to fork oil and rebound and compression settings and not the springs Quote
Stu Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Back the preload right off, separate fork sections, add spacers, rebuild with fresh oil. That's just bodging and risking the springs coming coil bound Quote
Stu Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Bodging! Buy the correct spring rate! Just because you have never had a problem it doesn't mean others wont! He could be twice your weight for all you know and need a lot more compression on those springs so a larger spacer plus more weight under hard braking. Quote
sam11189 Posted May 9, 2020 Author Posted May 9, 2020 its a 20 year old bike with 25k on the clock, maybe the springs in the fork tube tired or something? i dont understand why i cant get the free sag within factory setting. That has nothing to do with rider weight.ill need to have a look at some aftermarket springs, does the damper rod work in conjunction with after market springs?spacers did cross my mind but im not sure that would give me the best outcome. thx for replies Quote

Sadly I don't know where those settings went! They turned it in to a OK ish ride rather than a harsh twitchy bike The springs are known for being way too soft but PB made the best out of the stock set up Quote
TimR Posted May 9, 2020 Posted May 9, 2020 Take forks apart and measure springs length and compare to manufacturers settings ( found in service manuals or possibly google )Previous rider may have lowered it etc Quote
sam11189 Posted May 29, 2020 Author Posted May 29, 2020 thanks guys, i jacked the front end up and basically there is 20 mm of play in the fork legs. essentially forks move loosely 20mm before the springs starts to compress. the spring isnt under tension until the the stanchion is slid 20 mm inside the fork leg so maybe a spacer is all required. im not sure aftermarket springs would fix it unless a/m spring are longer. anyone have any tips for spacers material?thanks Quote
raesewell Posted May 29, 2020 Posted May 29, 2020 You say you changed the oil, did you use the same oil as came out or did you change the oil weight? It can make a huge difference if you use the wrong weight oil. Quote
