Ash123786 Posted September 19, 2022 Posted September 19, 2022 Hello first post in here hoping to get some help I brought a 2008 Yamaha ybr couple weeks back and it wouldn’t start off button or idle (would die out if didn’t keep revs up) so I took it to a bike shop and he told me the alternator was gone and was not charging battery so after abit of research I ordered a new alternator, rectifier, starter relay and spark plug anyway when the the alternator came and I tried to put it on then realised that it was wrong one as would not fit so I put the old one back in so I could just drive it,fitted new rectifier and relay but had to put old relay back in as nothing would happen (no lights on dash)when tried the new one.then I tried to start it off kick start but for some reason was making horrible grinding sound and would not start it would go to start but not fire up fast forward a week or so I’ve tried to start it again but it feels as if there is little to no compression at all when kicking it I’ve put fresh oil in it as it all leaked out from where alternator is I’m not sure if it’s meant to have oil in there or what. does anyone have any idea what the problem could be pleaseeee Quote
Fozzie Posted September 20, 2022 Posted September 20, 2022 Did you tighten the alternator bolts back up properly? And with the right bolts? Can you get a video and put it up? I've seen a bike before where a nasty knock became a loud grinding noise. The alternator was loose, and eventually rattled off and began scraping the case. But not having lights sounds like you blew a fuse, as the battery should still power everything. Did you connect the relay into the terminals snugly? You might have a loose connection. Quote

The lights come on now I meant when I put the new relay on nothing would happen so I but the old one back in and the lights were working just about but think my battery is dead. Still when I try to kick start it it’s like there’s no compression and just kick straight down. it does not make the noise anymore there’s no sound it’s like the engine is dead cause when I first tried to start it it would make that grinding sound as I kicked it and it would sound like it’s about to start but wouldn’t fire up I thought it could be engine oil as loads leaked out from where the generator is when I opened it not sure if that is meant to happen but I have put fresh oil in I also put a new spark plug in Quote
Fozzie Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 When you put the spark plug in, did you tighten it properly as stated on the box (as tight as you can on fingers and 1/4 to 1/2 a turn on a wrench)? Did you top the oil up to the correct level before trying to start? And can you charge the battery and see what happens with a brief press of the starter button (I think YBR's of that age have both). If it turns over very quickly, that's a big sign you've lost compression. Engines are fairly cheap second hand for these bikes, but may as well find out exactly what has let go first. Quote
rennie Posted September 22, 2022 Posted September 22, 2022 YBR's are notoriously difficult to start! I've had experience with both my Wife's and my Son's. If you haven't made things worse somehow then, from cold, with a fully charged battery, make sure fuel tap is on run, full choke, do not touch throttle! try to start, if/when it fires do nothing! let it run for 3 or 4 minutes then slowly turn choke down. once the choke is fully off try the throttle slowly Quote
