Hi,

I've bought a Kwak 1000SX and am now selling my Honda CBR650F.

I'm looking for advice on the best way to sell it.  A few things I need help with:

1. Where to sell - Autotrader?

2. Where to meet potential buyers - I've read they some could be scouting for bike to steal.  Optionally meet them at a car park - though this does appear dodgy from their side

3. Payment - is cash better than bank transfer?

4. Anything else I should be aware of?

TIA

I bought one of my bikes privately, and went to his house to view. No way would I have gone to a car park. In any case they'll want to see the paperwork, which has your address in it.

The guy let me do a test ride, but I did leave him Mrs. Fiddlesticks as collateral. 😁

I paid by bank transfer and picked up the bike next day once it had all gone through. Don't see any downside to this, although I've taken cash for a car payment before now.

Why not list through Autotrader/Ebay classifieds? You'll probably get loads of chancers and dealers trying it on price wise. If you like unsolicited calls from ambulance chasers stick an ad on gumtree too.

As above actually but I don`t leave @Fiddlesticks wife as collateral for obvious reasons.

The only thing I would say is if you are accepting bank transfers be prepared to move the monies to another account as soon as it has appeared on your balance.

Obviously cash is great but given the value of bikes these days think carefully about how much you want that kind of amount on your person or at your home address.

Good luck with it.

Cheers

The last bike I sold privately I advertised in the local rag,  I also got my mate to put it onto a local Face Book page for me.  I had a few people call to the house, as Fiddlesticks said, I wouldn't even consider meeting someone at a car park somewhere.  The guy who bought the bike paid via Bank transfer, its not a problem, all I did was confirm the money was in my bank before I let him take the bike.  He did ask about a test ride, and I told him he could, but I wanted the money in my hand or my bank before I would let him take it.  Be prepared for one or two chancers offering you stupid prices, and joy riders, thinking you're just going to let them take it for a spin.

Thanks for the advice.  So it looks like better to meet at my house, not offer test rides (unless deposit or wife has been left :)).

I'll probably got with Autotrader.

One thing just occurred to me - is it better to wait until April/May when the weather is better, and more people are looking at getting bikes?  I don't mind holding onto it for a few months if I can get a few hundred £ more.  Also, the MOT and Service aren't due till about July.

Definitely worth hanging on for a while.

Possibly advertise a week or two before easter especially if we get a spell of nice weather.

Also if you get left with someone`s wife advertise her on here you might make a small profit.

Nothing to stop you sticking a year's MOT on it and putting it through a service first.

Stand by for next wife joke !
