Mickly Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Hiya good folks of TMBF I have a new to me 2002 BMW F650GS single spark that refuses to start, as part of the diagnosis I have removed the generator & a good quantity of (rank) oil has spilled into the garage floor - is this to be expected, or should it be dry? Ta & expect a shot load of more questions about this subject Quote
Stu Posted March 1, 2023 Posted March 1, 2023 Pretty sure its to be expected well except for the rank bit Easy way to tell is does it have a gasket? if so its there to stop leaks Quote
Mickly Posted March 2, 2023 Author Posted March 2, 2023 Thanks @Stu It does have a gasket. There was a little oil in the air box and there is a vent from the generator cover into the air box which made me wonder. Quote
Bender Posted March 2, 2023 Posted March 2, 2023 Gaskets are also there to keep crap like water and dust out, it will be vented into airbox to stop any pressure building up,not convinced it should have a pool of oil, surely a drain plug would have been added? Quote
Mickly Posted March 2, 2023 Author Posted March 2, 2023 I’m waiting delivery of a Haynes manual & hopefully it will become clear. Tried looking at on line ones but gave up having to scroll through only for it to shoot back to the top Quote

Mickly Posted March 2, 2023 Author Posted March 2, 2023 (edited) I think I may have found the answer - see item #2 (Reason for screen photo is coz I used my prehistoric I-Pad 2 to look at the online manual and it can’t do anything else but surf t’internet coz it can’t accept any of the iOS updates to run anything) Edited March 2, 2023 by Mickly Quote
Solution Mickly Posted March 16, 2023 Author Solution Posted March 16, 2023 We have a winner @Stu The manual says to put the bike on its side stand when removing the generator cover to minimise the loss of any oil. The gasket ripped when I removed it so I promptly ordered the wrong gasket Correct gasket is now on the way. 1 Quote
