Oh-Danny-Boy Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 I know that helmets should be replaced every 3-5 years. The lid I have is about 7 years old. It was used for about 18 months, and been in storage since. Does it need replacing? My understanding is that it's the elements that weaken them. Any additional input / clarity welcome. Cheers Quote
Bender Posted March 23, 2023 Posted March 23, 2023 Use, sweat, weather, uv, dropping them all plays apart but if you know your lids had little use and the lining and padding is in good condition it's your judgement, don't underestimate the importance of the inner part, that's what your head is going to be rattling round in the event of an accident. https://helmetinspection.co.uk/ 1 Quote

Mississippi Bullfrog Posted March 24, 2023 Posted March 24, 2023 The construction of modern helmets means that the outer shell is good for longer than 7 years. It's the inner cushioning that gets hammered, but that's more with the amount of use than just age. You can replace the inner padding and linings but it's not really cost effective. When mine get to the stage where they aren't a good snug fit any longer I turn them into nesting boxes. 2 Quote
