Route tracking - logging points of interest on the move

Recommended Posts

Hiya,

I have just started using a cheap Android phone in Airplane Mode on my motorcycle trips as a Satnav running an app called Magic Earth with offline mapping. A friend suggested also running an app called GPS Logger in the background with which a route can be tracked and viewed afterwards on a PC.

This has been working flawlessly, however she previously used an old handheld Garmin GPS (sadly now faulty) mounted on the handlebars with which she could press a single button to log points of interest on the move. She says this was really useful for identifying things & places she had seen on road on a map afterwards - either just for identifying purposes or for planning to revisit them. She obviously misses this capability and I am keen to add it to my set up also.

I am aware of bluetooth buttons available cheaply that can be handlebar mounted and wondered whether anyone knows of any GPS logger/tracker apps that a button could be paired with? I have sent a message to the creators of GPS Logger to asked them and am awaiting a reply, but am also conscious that someone may well have been here before and an app already exists to provide this functionality.

Can anyone offer any know how & signpost me in the right direction?

Many thanks in advance! :)

That does look good! Not quite what i'm after tho.

I would like the ability to tap a button to log a waypoint when riding past something that catches my eye, and that after the ride see that waypoint on a map so I can find out more about it. GPS Logger sort of has the ability but it's more involved than even just tapping a button on the phone screen unfortunately and in any case is running in the background when navigating with the satnav app. Have been googling relentlessly and apart from a standalone GPS device & an Arduino project someone has done, there doesn't seem to be much out there 🤷‍♀️

It would be worth dropping the guys at MyRouteApp a line about.

Since I’ve been a member they have come on leaps and bounds and have implemented lots of ideas the community have suggested over the years.
By the sounds of it, what you are looking for does not exist….yet.
I think it’s a great idea and something the guys at MRA could do.

Can it be done with a voice command through Bluetooth? 'Hey google mark waypoint' or something?

That may be worth looking into, good shout 👍

Hi,

l like what you are trying to achieve. For me l just have a look when l get home, I wonder what that place near so and so is. Especially since you have the route tracked already. 🤔

The motivation is from my friend having the feature on her now defunct Garmin and finding it really handy, esp' for those instances where we forget what we have seen - having a pin on a map (& of course Streetview) can jog the memory. It may be the case that it cannot easily be done with a smartphone/Bluetooth button but I thought it worth asking peeps.

You never know, the GPS Logger app support may come up with an easy workaround ... fingers crossed!

I used to have it my Garmin, too, and it's useful. These days I use an app the has track logs, and I hope I can recognise where I was from the track. But as I've been able to show conclusively, it's not a fool-proof method.
