Hello people.

I've converted my full B driving licence back in 2019 and the DVLA issued me a UK Provisional Driving License with categories AM / A / B / f / k / q

As I know I'm allowed to ride a motorcycle with a capacity up to 125cc with a valid CBT certificate. So I do for 3 years already.

Now the interesting part is that on this provisional license I've got a full A category too, which allows me to ride any capacity motorcycle.

I've asked a few driving instructors and stuff at bike dealer shops and looking at my license they all said that they have never seen such thing as having full A category on a provisional license. And that this must have been a mistake made by DVLA.

Now I went to the GOV website to check the information there and it says:

Licence details

Driving status
You have a provisional driving licence
Licence valid from
6 Apr 2019
Licence valid to
5 Apr 2029

Also, in the tab Vehicles you can drive, a full A category is listed too:

  • Dates

    • Start date: 6 Apr 2019
    • End date: 8 Feb 2067
  • Description

A motorcycle of a power exceeding 35 kW or with a power to weight ratio exceeding 0.2 kW per kg, or A motorcycle of a power not exceeding 35 kW with a power to weight ratio not exceeding 0.2 kW per kg and derived from a vehicle of more than double its power. A motor tricycle with a power exceeding 15 kW

My main questions remain:

Am I allowed to ride a motorcycle with a capacity over 125cc as it's mentioned on the actual licence and on my licence record on the GOV page or not?

Or maybe I'm allowed but because of the provisional status not allowed to ride on a motorway?

Or did I won the driving licence lottery :) ?

Anyways, for my own safety and confidence, I plan to hire an instructor and take extra driving lessons once getting on a more serious bike.

All of this is so confusing.

Your help in clarifying this situation is highly appreciated

If you are on a provisional licence the clue is in the name. It's provisional.  You can drive a car but not without a fully qualified driver in the car with you or without L plates. You can ride a bike over 125 but only under tuition as a learner. You've not won the licence lottery!
