Phil1 Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 Does anyone have any experience of fitting a sat nav, or phone mount on a bike with clip ons? I'm really struggling to find anything decent for an SV650 with clip on handlebars as there's just virtually no where to mount anything. Ever since I've started driving/riding, I've always liked to set off with a plan in mind of a general area or a particular road I'd like to try. I know a lot of people just set off and decide as they're going along, but I generally like to have some sort of plan. A sat nav would be ideal for me as I can set up a route on my PC on waze, and then just go to my phone and open the app and there it is ready to go. Quote
JRH Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 (edited) Have a look at Ram Mounts. They do systems to fit to mirror mounts, master cylinder fixings and head stem holes. https://www.ram-mount.co.uk/pages/components Edited April 6, 2024 by JRH 1 Quote
Simon Davey Posted April 6, 2024 Posted April 6, 2024 (edited) Yes, I use a ram ball that replaces one of the bolts of your clip ons. The bolt passes through the ball itself, very neat and tidy. The pack comes with three lengths of bolt. Works perfectly. The shop has an absolutely endless (almost) variety. All the brands basically work the same though so just choose the one that has the best attachment to your phone/ camera for you. I used UA as I put my phone in their hard case so my phones touch screen still works in the rain. Quote

Simon Davey Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 Did you manage to get what you needed @Phil1? Quote
Phil1 Posted April 10, 2024 Author Posted April 10, 2024 (edited) @Simon Davey No, I'm still looking. I can't decide what to do and I'm probably overthinking it. I've decided I don't like the idea of my phone mounted somewhere on the bike. It's better in my pocket I think as there's less chance of it being "lost" if I was to come off and it's got emergecy contacts on etc. I'd rather it be on my person if you like. I'm now looking down the avenue of a seperate sat nav and seen a tomtom rider with a mount on ebay, but realised I've now got to pay for the kids afterschool club so funds are low again . Anyone fancy subbing me? Edited April 10, 2024 by Phil1 1 Quote
Simon Davey Posted April 10, 2024 Posted April 10, 2024 I stupidly bought a Ultimate Addons phone mount and case, it's brilliant, but like you, I keep my phone in my pocket, and just mount the satnav on the clip-on mount. My satnav controls my phone so happy days. Quote

Phil1 Posted May 18, 2024 Author Posted May 18, 2024 (edited) Moving back to this subject again..... I've just realised I've got a 5-6 year old (my last) HTC phone which still works fine. It needs a new screen and back on it but other than that it's ok. I'm now thinking I can use this as a sat nav, whilst keeping my main phone in my pocket. The old phone doesn't have a sim card etc, but I can set up a hotspot on my new phone, and connect to it wirelesly. Onto mounting it to the bike..... I've decided I might be able to use the locking nut on the top centre of the yoke as it has a hole pre-drilled into it...... The nut just unscrews off using a 32mm socket. Putting a short M6 stainless bolt/set screw through the hole with a locking nut on it, and then use one of these as a starting point.... They do one with a threaded base already on it, but it would make it virtually impossible to get the socket back over the top to screw the nut back to the top of the yoke, using the above I can screw the nut back on, and then the ball mount on afterwards. Then one of these..... It should in theory give me enough to bring the phone to a position where it's out of the way of everything and still be easy to see. Somewhere to the left of the igntion barrel should be ideal. The only thing I'd need to do then is introduce a way to keep the battery topped up, which should be easy enough, lots of options in that department. Edited May 18, 2024 by Phil1 2 Quote
Fleck Posted June 11, 2024 Posted June 11, 2024 I use an android auto/carplay screen, was about £130 Quote
Phil1 Posted June 25, 2024 Author Posted June 25, 2024 (edited) Well I've ordered the relevant parts, came to about £70 with the ball connection, the phone holder and extension arm, the USB socket and cable and a short fused cable so I can make up a connection from the battery. Can't decide whether or not to run a direct live feed from the battery, or try and splice into a switched live. The headlight might an option as I guess it won't use a huge amount of power and is close by too. That said it can make removal later a pain and the USB socket has an on/off switch anyway, plus the bike always goes on the smart charger whenever I'm not using it. Another thing I might do is change the screen and glass back cover on the phone just to make it a bit smarter as both are cracked. Not a massive job though. Edited June 25, 2024 by Phil1 1 Quote
Phil1 Posted June 27, 2024 Author Posted June 27, 2024 (edited) Phase one complete. Ram mount came today so had a little play around..... Stud fitted to the centre nut Ram mount ball, arm and phone holder fitted. View from the cockpit. Overall super pleased and feels nice and solid. I don't think there will be any issues with movement. Clears everything with plenty of space and I can still see all the normal instruments and get to the ignition barrel. Next step to fit a usb port so I can keep the phone topped up while riding. It's an older phone and keeping the screen on continuously will drain the battery. Edited June 27, 2024 by Phil1 2 Quote

To each their own but just strikes me as distraction that I'd end up faffing with. Quote
