Ocean Posted April 22 Share Posted April 22 Hi all  Got a 14 day planned trip in september coming up. Luggage is obviously a big part of it and very important however I don't feel like dropping £1000 on a mosko moto tailbag and pannier luggage. I do however because of climbing have an extensive range of high performance duffel bags from Ortlieb. I don't mind spending a bit of money but steep figures are obviously not ideal. Has anyone jerry rigged duffel bags, tents, dry bags etc onto their bikes and if so how did you do it and did they perform. Gerontious Posted April 23 Share Posted April 23 (edited) It’s easy to jury rig luggage including makeshift panniers. - but - you will need to ensure that the pannier or bag hanging on the exhaust side does not touch the exhaust. That might mean some form of frame - or something - to keep them apart. Otherwise it’s almost certain to melt if it’s any kind of plastic. Once you have panniers of some sort then a large bag. Perhaps one of your duffel bags across the entire width will carry a whole load of gear. I use a 59 litre and that contains all my camping gear. smallfrowne Posted April 25 Share Posted April 25 I've got a couple of rok straps, very nice. I don't like the idea of open hooks, mine are the ones with loops in the end. I also use a bit of rope tied in a Ray Mears number #3 knot. I suppose people have used bungees since forever so whatever but anything heavy I'd like a rock strap on it or a taught bit of rope, and being a climber surely you are set on that front. Just have a go ahead of time so you can get the faffing out of the way if aren't sure how it might all fit. You can use bits of steel or ally bought from DIY shops to fashion outriggers to keep soft bags off of exhausts if needs be. Otherwise panniers and luggage items tend to be quite bike specific and expensive. But then there's also used options on Facebook groups and eBay.  I've got alpkit dry bags which aren't exactly thick and super heavy duty, but they have worked very well and haven't exactly worn through anywhere.
