Hi.

Out for an evening ride around Whitby away from some of the traffic chaos and came across these hooligans been pushed along the road by the car. I've had problems before so I decided to treat them with the respect they deserve.

One of my friend later told me they were heifers. Thats what me granddad used to call em but I knew what he meant and thats what I would have called em if they'd clattered me bike.

Regards.

it’s just another way of calling them a fat cow. So an insult. In a society with a misogynistic history we have a shedload of insults for women we don’t like. And this is just one of many regional examples.

In farming a heifer is a female cow, normally a young one that has not had any calves yet. So is either being kept alive to eventually be slaughtered for beef. Or to eventually join a milk herd once it’s old enough to be impregnated.

Never heard of that term

Fairly common term in my corner of Shropshire, but then we are a rural county.

Heifer = Young female cow before their first calf. Once mature, to provide primarily milk but also female offspring for sale.

Bullock = Young male cow, castrated and raised for beef, but note young males from dairy cattle (like the ones encountered by the OP) have little value in the UK and are usual slaughtered fairly quickly. Cattle for beef are different breeds. Many use Aberdeen Angus but around here the market tends to prefer Hereford Cross.

A few I came across once just outside Settle. They didn't & wouldn't budge so I had to very carefully ride around them without being too daft. There's no arguing with the highland cattle, they are absolutely enormous and dwarfed me, also rather Horny (no not that sort of horny).

There was another bike just on the other side of the cattle grid who wasn't too happy about going but soon moved off after I negotiated them.

Wouldn't fancy that as an epitaph  - "gored to death by horny cows while riding a motorbike."

Hi.

Granddad used to say "watch out for these f###ers". I had to be carefull as to what I said to my mum when we got back home. Hence the word "Effers". Got it.😆.
