Dan4 Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Hello everyone from a new member. I'm an oldie, retired. Biked in the 80s haven't had one since I switched to car. Passed RAC/ACU test in 1975. Took the test and got a full licence the same year. Did m/c courier work for a few years in London. Now getting the urge to go back to motorcycling. For me, nothing can beat a motorcycle for the sense of adventure, freedom and independence. Have had: CB125S, RD125, CB400N, CD185, but a big single road bike is what I've always wanted. 2 Quote
Simon Davey Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Welcome to the forum @Dan4 BSA (Goldstar), Royal Enfield and Honda all have up to date single cylinders to choose from, and they're just a few that come to mind. Quote
Dan4 Posted August 21, 2024 Author Posted August 21, 2024 Thanks for your welcomes Fiddlesticks, Bender, AstronaughtNinja and suggestion/s Simon (I think I'm going to like it here). I knew of the Royal Enfield, and that appeals, but feared the choice of thumpers to be limited these days. Pleasantly surprised. 2 Quote
bonio Posted August 21, 2024 Posted August 21, 2024 Suzuki DRZ-400SM . They also did a 650 if you want something that big. Then there's the Bimmer funduro, the F650, although they stopped production in 2007, so perhaps it's getting harder to find. Quote
Capt Sisko Posted August 22, 2024 Posted August 22, 2024 If you're buying new and have £5k you might find the new Triumph 400 single right up your street. Probably about the same performance as you old CB400N but it'll stop & handle a hell of a lot better, plus all the latest toys & tricks. Quote
Dan4 Posted August 22, 2024 Author Posted August 22, 2024 Thanks Bonie, 650's probably too big for me. Also I'd like a single that I can right myself without help (if the need unfortunately arises!). Plus won't be going for a brand new bike, a used one will fit my budget better. No trail bikes. Capt Sisko, thanks, the Triumph 400 single looks good. 1 Quote
jr71 Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Royal Enfield classic 500 is a pretty looking and quite basic piece of machinery 1 Quote

Dan4 Posted August 23, 2024 Author Posted August 23, 2024 Royal Enfield Classic?! Nice one jr71. Thanks, that'll go on my short list, but preferably fitted with a shorter exhaust. Astronautninja. Is that the RH1250S? Some machine! LOL, sadly not for me either. If only I was younger and had deeper pockets. Quote

AstronautNinja Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Bobbers seem pretty cool and chilled Quote
RideWithStyles Posted August 23, 2024 Posted August 23, 2024 Would you be open to a small capacity twin? That would open up a lot more options with little impact of negatives Quote

Dan4 Posted August 24, 2024 Author Posted August 24, 2024 AstronaugtNinja, a Bobber Scout, is an awesome bike but again is too big for me. I'm pleased for Indian Motorcycles is still around. I previously associated the name with lightweight trail bikes that looked rather good but tended to leak oil. Many years back. I hardly see a fraction of motorcycles on the road as I did in the 70s & 80s so it's surprising but welcome that the market for them is still strong. RideWithStyles, aside from it being a long-time ambition, I prefer a single cylinder for the low-down pull, lighter weight - and daft old me, I really like the sound of a big single. Quote

Just incase it’s the first then, Out of how many other possible? A bit of both when searching for my car I was down to probably 15 in my target range, 85 is a good chunk. Yes many others but that's almost irrelevant if the model choice has been made. I'm pretty drunk and don't remember our initial conversation or what it was about, I was also pretty drunk then Quote
