Smc1791 Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 So I'm getting the bike back tomorrow. Haven't actually seen it yet but I've been told they've ripped the ignition out and cut a few wires. If I can post a few pictures here could I get some advice on how to proceed. Had the bike 2 weeks before it got stolen and it was my first ever vehicle. I'm clueless. I think it will cost 300-400 to fix at a garage so I'm wondering if possible I could do it myself as I feel I could probably manage it. Quote
Simon Davey Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 When you get it back, put some pictures up so the damage can be seen. Welcome to the forum @Smc1791 1 Quote
RideWithStyles Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Hi and sorry for your terrible experience already with biking. Scum like that need either proper prison time or death penalty no if or buts. Same as what Simon says. as long as it’s not a Honda HISS system where the ignition is “keyed” to the bikes ecu it makes it real easy so you can make it as cheap or as original as possible. if it is then as long as the you have the barrel and its not damaged then ok. If it has been damaged then it gets very expensive and more specialised. 1 Quote
Tiggie Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Many years ago my bike was stolen. When I got it back I saw they had tried using a screwdriver in the ignition ( it was an old bike but not that old) and then cut random wires and twisted them together like they must of seen on tv. I managed to fix it with some crimp connectors. Luckily they had not damaged the ecu with their attempted hot wiring. Only problem I had after that was the key was a little loose in the barrel but not bad enough to bother replacing. 1 Quote
Smc1791 Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 (edited) Hi thanks for your replies so far. So I got it back today having not actually seen it. They've cut the pocket off to access the side and just punched a hole in it to access the wires. Lovely. I'm not sure if I had the steering lock on when they stole it... I'm wondering is that why they've knocked the barrel back to knock the steering lock off? No actual damage to the ignition barrel. They didn't even try it. Oh yeah snapped the seat lock of course. The black stuff everywhere is fingerprint dust. They managed to put around 100 miles on the clock before they got caught Edited October 16, 2024 by Smc1791 Quote
Smc1791 Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 I'm thinking now it's knocked back like that because they snapped it Quote
Solution Simon Davey Posted October 16, 2024 Solution Posted October 16, 2024 It does look like you need to remove those panels and just repair the wiring, replace the seat lock, and give it a clean. Hopefully you can order new panels. Quote
Bender Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 You could make a cover for that hole and just rivet some aluminium over it if you on a budget 1 Quote
Smc1791 Posted October 16, 2024 Author Posted October 16, 2024 I'd be happy to just wire it back up and cover it over. How would I know if the steering lock has been snapped and whether or not it's caused serious damage. Also... How would I get the panel off... Quote
Tiggie Posted October 16, 2024 Posted October 16, 2024 Panels will probably just be a few screws that need undoing. Quote
RideWithStyles Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 Two ways to damage the steering lock, while it’s on the steering lock you kick or swing on the handle bar and the other is to punch the barrel out of place with a hammer as all it is a little metal notch that sticks out of the barrel when engaged into the frame/headstock notch. so if you put the steering lock on and it the handle a bar stays in place it’s ok. bud Posted October 17, 2024 Posted October 17, 2024 When someone did the steering lock on a bike I had as a project. They had picked the handlebar so far round. The metal pin had jammed the steering. I just removed the lock barrel. Smoothed the damage out, and fixed the wiring. Then fitted the barrel again. If the key turns smoothly to the lock position. Which the bars turned. It might be fine.
