The changes to our licencing were introduced in about 2013

The Irish Government would do anything The EU says as they wanted to be the poster boys of europe :-) :-)

Yeah mebbe, but when it comes to the motorcycle licence test, the EU directive says this

Quote

6.2.3. At least two manoeuvres to be executed at slow speed, including a slalom; this should allow competence to be assessed in handling of the clutch in combination with the brake, balance, vision direction and position on the motorcycle and the position of the feet on the foot rests;

6.2.4. At least two manoeuvres to be executed at higher speed, of which one manoeuvre in second or third gear, at least 30 km/h and one manoeuvre avoiding an obstacle at a minimum speed of 50 km/h; this should allow competence to be assessed in the position on the motorcycle, vision direction, balance, steering technique and technique of changing gears

My guess is that most  EU countries miss out the less convenient bits.

STATIONARY VEHICLE OVERTAKE EXERCISE

Whilst riding in a 60kph zone you will then be asked by your examiner to ‘pull into the left and stop’.

Your examiner will then drive his vehicle around you and pull in further up the road (about 150 metres away).

He may then instruct you to ride towards him and then move out of the way of his vehicle.

As you ride towards him in the middle of your lane you will accelerate up to 55kph then check your right mirror, shoulder check, indicate and then move out leaving more than a car doors width of clearance on the overtake.

You will then be instructed to ‘pull in and stop and wait’. He will then return to his vehicle and when he is ready he will then instruct you to ‘move off’.

This exercise is NOT a sudden swerve.

You are displaying to your examiner your ability to adjust your position on the road safely should a hazard happen to alter it.

Yup... 6.2.3 "including a slalom" is missing. I think most countries do the same.
