Hello everyone!

Completely new to bikes, want to buy something around June 2025 to start a road adventure around the UK for a few months starting around August. No idea what I'm doing hence thought I'd take a few months to learn as much as I can about bikes and so on before making any decisions.

Hi, welcome in.

What are your expectations in terms of time and costs?

You'll have 4 main steps to go through to be road legal:

  • CBT (you may need a bit of experience first - taster sessions are available)
  • Theory inc. Hazard Perception
  • MOD 1 test (car park stuff)
  • MOD 2 (on road stuff)

Assuming you're upwards of 24 years old, that'll get you a full license. A bike school will get you through the steps but lessons will be required in addition. Also helmet, gloves, boots, jacket and trousers.

I guess that it's possible to go round the UK with only a CBT behind you and forget the theory and mod 1 and mod 2. You'd be limited to riding a 125, so you'd not make any great speed, but perhaps the point of your journey trip is to travel slowly.

Hello and welcome.

If.you can, buy the bike early in the year.

You will get better deals up to April while in the summer or near it you will have to pay more for the same bike.

Welcome to the forum.

It is possible to do some big trips on a 125.  Lots of people do, but a full licence will give you more options.
