The Versys 1000 has one of the smoothest, torquiest engine around. It will sit at 80 mph with ease, munching up the miles. My only criticism is the harsher than I would like ride, even with the suspension on its most bouncy settings. That applied to both the standard shocks and the uprated Nitron option. Quote

I collect it on Saturday morning. 4 Quote

Just a thought: Sometimes going too soft (depending on what you’ve got and done) can give the impression of a harsher ride because it’s not dampening the force, sitting at the top of the stroke and patting the shite out of you. What tyres are on and pressure your running? That can make a high difference too. Quote

Metzeler tyres with the recommended pressure. The bike is being sold and other than the ride I have been delighted with it. Enjot your new bike, I posted my suggestion without reading the whole thread. Quote
vstromming Posted April 3 Posted April 3 (edited) Bit late to this but I had the same issue last year. A stream of sportstourers and at the time a VFR1200F which I loved but I wanted more comfort, better electronics and to keep the reliability of the VFR. After a very close flirtation with a KTM 1290S I went for a 21 V Strom 1050XT. Kind of fell in love with it on the test ride and you know with a fair bit of certainty they'll never go wrong but will do the majority of what the competition can in the real world - and keep doing it. I also tend to ride considerably faster on the strom even with it's 60hp + defecit compared to the VFR.... I put a Nitron R1 ADV shock on mine and it made a huge difference to the back end - massively better damping than oem. Get ride of the shockingly bad Bridgestones as well. Dunlop Mutants are my favourite now. I've done almost 9k in 11 months on mine and that doesn't include any commuting..... Edited April 3 by vstromming 3 Quote

My tyres have only done 100 miles, so I'll keep them for now . I've bought a new road version, I'm not likely to ever need the abilities of the XT. Love the electric aids though, everything from cruise control to hill hold has been useful already. 1 Quote

If they were anything like my A41's they'll be utterly terrifying in the wet so watch out! Yeah, the newer ones were just slightly more than I wanted to spend and I'm very wary of TFT screens and quiskshifters after all the horror stories you hear - albeit less on Suzuki. Did you find the same thing about being able to ride it faster most of the time? I still can't put my finger on why it is.... Quote

It was cheaper for me to buy a new one, interest rates are diabolical, so 0% was not to be ignored. It's warrantied for 7 years if I use the dealer, 3 years if I don't. So not panicking too much about any possible problems. Not sure what you mean about riding it faster. I'm cornering faster than my ZZR because it gives me more confidence, and the brakes are seriously good. The acceleration is pretty darn good, after 80 it tails off. Which suits me, and was a big reason for getting rid of my ZZR1200. That was an animal, and it was easy to get to stupid speeds without even trying. I'm still running it in though, only 500 miles to go Edited April 4 by Simon Davey 1 Quote

It's the first bike I've ever taken to get dealer serviced - which was good as I got to test the 800DE! Potentially that, yes. I was just surprised that I tended to ride around 10%+ quicker in almost all circumstances than I was on my VFR1200F/K1300/K1200 etc etc etc even with the pretty large power differential. Front's are excellent on mine but the rear was giving up the ghost in the Picos last week. I think it's just oem pads though so may change them for SBS etc. Have you figured out how the hill hold "deactivates" yet? I can't work out if it's with throttle input, clutch or wheel rotation. I can do hill starts without issue without it but just curious...... Quote
Simon Davey Posted April 4 Author Posted April 4 (edited) @vstromming Deactivate hill hold with a double tap on the lever, or throttle out of it. Edited April 4 by Simon Davey Quote
