What could be causing this?

When between about 30 and 50mph there is a vibration on the front wheel and handlebars this is most severe at about 40mph. If i leave go there is a violant "wobble" Any ideas?

if i were you id take it to a bike shop or a mate that can do it for you.

1st don't leave go, you'll get a tankslapper, and i agree with cb1, your wheel is out of balance..

Check your tyre pressures, and condition of your tyres.

If they are worn, gone out of 'profile' this could either cause or exaggerate the oscilation.

Wrong pressure could also amplify or cause an issue.

Check tyre is sitting squarely on the rim too.

Do you have a top box or carrier fitted?

This can also effect handling as you describe (especially at certain speeds as other dynamics start to kick in).

Ok iv had new tyers put on today, pressures are fine, Wheel has been balanced, I do have a top box but this seem to be a very front end vibration!

The problem is slightly better but still causing a problem!

Any more ideas?

get the head bearings checked out and remove the top box and take for a test ride :)

apply the front brake hard and slowly rock the bike back and forth, any movement of the forks except travel means the head bearing is loose or needs replacing..

put the bike on the centre stand and have a mate push down the rear, leaving the front in the air..

slowly turn from right to left and feel for notchiness - head bearing shot. needs replacing. (mainly with older bikes that had ball bearings instead of needle bearings.. if this is the case replace with needle bearings)

also grab the the base of the forks by the front wheel and press on one whilst pulling on the other baiscally rocking them it could be your yolks (alloy thing that holds the forks) is out of true and loose, line up and tighten as per manual / manufacturer spec.
