Best to get a bike before CBT?

Recommended Posts

Hey my friend was asking me if it is best to get a 50cc bike so practice on, like starting and stopping, before he goes in for his CBT. Or is it just worth going in for the CBT and doing it on one of their geared bikes with no previous bike experience at all.

The CBT is designed for people with no previous experience, why turn up with bad habits before he's even started?

Also; The CBT is required before any lessons/riding can take place on public roads, so if he's planning on 'getting some practice in', he'd better think carefully about where he's gonna do it.

I did a 2 hr 'taster' session with one of my local schools before CBT. It just let me get to grips with starting and stopping the bike, pulling away from a standstill, going round corners and changing gear - enough that:

a) I knew I actually would be capable of operating the machine, and

b) I was able to get through CBT without getting stuck on something and getting left behind or missing something out.

It was £40 very well spent and I'd recommend it to anyone wanting to do CBT but having their doubts about it.

If your mate has no previous road experiance then its best to get a rough idea of how a roundabout works, what roadsigns mean, etc before the CBT to make things easier for the day :D

im sure all CBT instructors have horror stories of 16 yr olds taking roundabouts the continental way, etc
