  1. A quick Google shows the triple is a bit prone to losing valve clearance due to seat and valve wear.
  2. Screw in the compression tester, make sure all other cylinders Dont have spark plugs in (so engine turns over at least 300rpm) Also turning the engine over by hand wont generate enough pressure to read properly so has to be done with starter motor If the TDC isnt accurate then the valve timing Will be off, and that seriously affects PSI Throttle should be wide open aswell. Don't have the spark plugs in the leads while cranking, fuel will still be drawn in and spat out the plug hole, any spark will ignite the fuel (seen it happen) Also crank the engine on the starter until the pressure gauge stops rising. Assume your battery is in good health and its cranking at the normal speed?
  3. Ah, shhheeeeiiiiahhhttt! I did not do that. I’ll get the head back off and do the checks and make sure I have it all right. The cams were spot on, going from memory. I had the pictures of where the arrows positio and the teeth were right, but I will check and check. This is so vital, because I want to make it so I can show others how they don’t need to scrap a bike, or get into debt for repairs. I have to finish this. I might end up keeping this bike. No need to remove the head to check the clearances, just the cam cover. Procedure should be in Haynes manual.
  4. May have missed it in your posts but you have checked the valve clearances when the head was back on?
  5. Couple of points. Why don't you strip all the valves out,lap in one at a time and give a final clean then reassemble? Keep all the parts in order to where they come from. The lapping paste can spread around and get under the valves just have just put back in and cause wear later. Be careful when handling the valves you don't transfer any paste onto the stem. Are you able to check the run out or bend of the valves? Trying to lap a bent valve is futile. Can you get anyone to do a vacuum test on the seats once lapped? An engine recon place can help with this. Failing that, some engineers blue can show up any dodgy seats. When reinstalling the collets, use a pair of tweezers or stick then to a small screwdriver with a bit of grease. They can be fiddly little jokers. When cleaning the top of the barrels,be mindful of any dirt, old gasket or bits of scotchbrite dropping down the side of the piston.
  6. Got my refund sorted and free tickets to Aberdare race.
  7. I have been twice at Rockingham,an hour on the road with the Rozzers and 15 mins on track for £35.Bargain.
  8. That totally sucks, was really looking forward to it. Luckily I can cancel my hotel for free and have requested a refund on the tickets.

    Nuts

Can't you make your own out of 14mm hex bar?
  10. We have been organising our loft the last couple of weekends, uncovered some stuff I knew was up there somewhere. When I bought my Honda SS125 in 1998,I was given a genuine workshop manual, parts book, owners handbook, sales brochure and even a pair of leather goggles that the first owner,a Mr James Brown (yes really) of Coventry used to wear.I later bought a bike mag from 1968 with a road test of the Honda. I also found a sales brochure from mid 70s that featured the GT380. And finally I found a set of top trumps cards of light motorcycles that me and my brother's used to play with. I guess only people of a certain age will understand these. Oh how easily amused we once were.
  11. Arai,Spidi one piece leathers,Alpinestar boots,Spada summer or Dainese winter gloves,Alpinestar showerproof jacket,Alpinestar one piece rain suit on R1 or RGV. Arai, battered leather jacket, pair of jeans for GT380
  12. Yep definitely be there.
  13. Done this numerous time on race engines works just fine. We have a special tool knocked up that is basically a threaded spring compressor on a bracket, the bracket bolts to the head on any suitable threads. It would require you to fabricate such a bracket to suit the trumpet and be sure it fits all the cylinders. Also on another engine type we used a lever under a bar that was bolted to the head. If both cams are out,set the piston at BDC on the cyl you are working on so the air pressure doesn't flip the engine over and tangle the chain up. It can be a time consuming faff, and have to say for the sake of just whipping a few head bolts out of your engine you could spend hours making it work when having the head off would be more straight forward.
  14. You can shorten the coil by snipping one thread off at a time with some decent side cutters. You should be able to work out how long you need by measuring the thickness of the fork leg and calculating how many pitches there are. My advice about removing stuck inserts is not to pull out with pliers as you can remove some of the thread aswell. Carefully unwind the insert with pliers or you can buy a special tool which is a v shaped blade which digs into the insert when turned anti clockwise.
  15. Looks like genuine rings are available. Just checked out CMNSL, which is Dutch I think. Try ringing your local Suzuki dealer with the part number, you might be surprised If not CMNSL will ship to the UK. Not sure if this is your model but you can go back and choose the right one. https://www.cmsnl.com/suzuki-gsx250e-1982-z-general-export-e01_model13609/partslist/FIG10.html#results My 26 year old RGV is on the excellent vintage program with Suzuki, with a few exceptions I can get almost everything for it from my local dealer within a couple of days. Even bought a brand new crankshaft from them last year.
  16. Couldn’t get the XT working yesterday, and both the others are off road atm. So, when I finally got it working, I flew out this morning for a ride. Ice everywhere - it was awesome fun R1,ice and fun are not 3 words I would put in the same sentence. Unless it was "I went out on the R1 in the ice and it was no frikkin' fun"
  17. I was going to go but our road was still icy at 10.45am. Two guys from work went said it was really good with almost 300 bikes turnout. Rideout well organised aswell. Felt vindicated for wimping out when one of my workmates fell off on the way home.
  18. Welcome. Could be piston rings gummed up in the pistons. My Honda 125 had been stood for years also and wouldn't start.Took the barrels off and carefully freed off the rings. Can you do a leakdown test on it? That will tell you where the loss of sealing is.
  19. Ooh I have those boots they're super comfy They are like a pair of slippers compared to my Sidi boots.
  20. Checked valve clearances? Compression test or leakdown? Blocked air filter?
  21. Got my ride out on the R1 today, first time on it in 7 weeks You got to love the British weather,2 days ago we struggled to get off our estate in a car because of the ice, today its 13 degrees and the roads are mostly dry. Good excuse to break in my new boots aswell.
  22. That's handy to know what year is yours 1980 ish.
  23. There is a page now about official off-site camping at Llanwyrtd Wells. Appears to be a few existing sites in the area aswell http://www.ukcampsite.co.uk/sites/results.asp?county=powys Would think any shrewd landowners in the area would seize the chance to make a few quid by opening a temporary campsite for the weekend?
  24. Topic already covered in the Racing and track day section And yes I'm going
  25. Weather forecast for Saturday looks promising, fingers crossed I can get out on the R1
