  1. Observations are the main ones, I would say also be aware of your lane position/discipline. Since your going through training, your instructor would be giving you pointers on what they notice you are not doing so just try and have fun out on the road and the rest will take care of itself. (That’s what my instructor taught me) :thumb:

    I’ve been trying to make habit of my observations, but I’m not completely confident with the whole U-turning, I’ve had a go in a car park using three spaces as pointers and I’m able to do a uturn consistently after the practice


    The space available in those three spaces is 7.3m and I’ve probably been doing it in about 7m, it’s just the shoulder check before committing to the turn, would they allow me to stop and make the observation before taking the uturn? Or would that be considered a fault? As I can’t actually manage to shoulder check and uturn in one motion as it sends me off balance since I’m not focusing on where the bike needs to go.

    The way I got taught is you do the mirror observations + lifesaver (left and right) at the start before you move off and as you ride down the line and just before the turn to the right, you must take a right lifesaver and proceed to take the turn. If you have got sufficient slow control you should not need to stop completely but as long as you don't put your feet down at any point, you should be fine. :thumb:

  2. I managed to pass my Mod 2 on the second attempt with 6 minors!


    Got a warning about making sure I leave plenty of room when meeting traffic when lanes merge and to slow it down a bit when travelling through residential areas with parked cars on both sides. I knew I was overthinking these situations at teh time thinking I could get penalised for undue hesitation which I have seen other people talk about getting fails for going too slow. I suppose it heavily depends on the examiner you get.

    If I'm honest I felt I was riding better on my first attempt, as this time I was WAY more nervious and honestly thought I had failed again.


    Now to find myself some wheels!!! Excited is an understatment, been wanting this since I was 17!!! :D :D :D

  3. What do you diehard commuters have in your wardrobe?

     

    I have an oxford montreal 3.0 jacket and montreal 2.0 pants. I wore them all through winter and only once did the let a small amount of water in near my stomach, and that was in torrential rain. I do top up the waterproofing with the sprays you can buy.

     

    I too have this setup. :thumb: as the jacket doesn't come with back armour, I wear the Forcefield pro back protector.


    When the heavens open up though and to improve visibility for other road users, I usually wear the Oxford Rainseal hi-vis over jacket over the Montreal one. I highly recommend the over jacket as it has kept the rain out very well during Winter last year.

    I take it you've done the standard checks to see if the fuse and the battery are fine, I recently had to change the ignition barrel on my CBR as that part became faulty (no idea how) and the barrel was fine however it would just not turn on. I had to get my repairer to pick the bike up as it broke down after I just finished work. My repairer was the one who suggested to check the fuse and battery first.

    Has anybody realised that it is not only about “being in the right”! Or not. But being alive or able to walk!

    As an across the board road user, Fire service and list of advanced tests.

    On a mororcycle you are vulnerable, ride aware, enjoy. Does being “in the right” help when you are in a wheelchair.

     

    I completely agree! I'll take being alive and able to walk every time.


    When I first started off and got more confident on the road, I used to lane filter in the middle of 2 lanes going in the same direction, just to get to the front of the queue when vehicles are waiting at the lights. I've stopped doing that now as I've realised even with me being safe and passing them slowly, the unpredictability of other road users are outwith my control. Better to be SAFE than sorry!

  8. Not sure if I'm missing something here, but given how you describe the damage then having it written off and subsequently buying it back for £350 sounds like a potentially sound move. You just need to get a repair estimate, or decide whether you're happy to ride it as is (assuming it's safe) as a cheap runaround.

     

    It will be, it's a Cat N, which is Non-structural damage, this sort of write off doesn't even require you to send the V5 logbook back to DVLA for them to mark it as a write off. I think it's down to what Phil wants to do with it, if he plans to sell the bike in the future, it being a Cat N would affect the selling price, however if he's going to keep it as a spare, I would agree with what others have said here and buy the bike back, he would still get £2,350 as settlement, he could use that as a down payment for another bike. 8-)

  9. I work in insurance and if it were me, I would ask for a copy of that Total Loss report so that you can see how your insurance company has came up with that value (They have to provide you a copy of it).


    Have you ever got a quote from your local mechanic/garage to see what they think it would cost? Like Adam says, most insurance company would be pricing the parts at retail prices. It does differ between insurance companies but typically if the repair cost exceeds 70% of the value of your bike, the insurance company would write it off, so if your repairer can get a price that is lower than that, you may be able to stop them from writing it off and they could offer you a cash in lieu settlement; however not all insurance companies offer that option.


    What has the Third Party said in all this? Did you catch her in the act? If so, did she admit fault? You may be able to go down the avenue and go through her insurance and see what they say, the Third Party Insurance would probably want to try and repair it for you to mitigate their losses.

  10. Why not try one of those tank bags from Oxford, I've got the M15R version and it works great for my CBR as it's got a magnetic tank.

    You could put the TomTom in the middle pocket which has an anti-glare shield so works pretty good when on the road and blocks the sun out when it's shining down on you. It's definitely worth it but retail price is quite pricy so try gumtree and eBay for a 2nd hand ones (I got my M15R through eBay) :)
