are you using spark plugs with the top removed or still fitted in other words is there a thread showing at the top where the cap fits,is the cap a very loose fit on the top of the plug ?does it need a firm push to fit on properly?,only asking as some plug caps need the top thread exposed others need the top cap fitted onto the plug

im not familiar with the bike is it 2 stroke or 4 stroke a 2 stroke might struggle depending on how big the hole is,also if its a 2 stroke when was the last t ime you changed the spark plug

have you run it out of petrol at all as at 3000 rpm is about the revs it goes onto main jet from the idle jet and you might of dragged some crap into the carb

they are knackered replacing is the only fix for them the solvent used to stick the pad to the metal back plate has given up if you keep using it like that it can result in wearing the brake drum out or even locking up the rear wheel if the pad material jumps up over the other one

but is the crankcase open where the starter motor would fit if not t hat would need machining out to the correct size for the seal to fit on the starter motor,i thought all the xt600's were electric start and it was just the 500 and 550 that were kick start mind you it has been nearly 30 years since i owned my xt500

edit:: having just had a look round even the 1990 xt 600 was electric start only so is the op sure his bike hasnt had a 550 engine fitted at some point

is it points or electronic ignition system have you checked the condition of the ht cap where it screws onto the ht lead and how well charged the battery is

with a pod filter it will be allowing more air in so would often be running lean it would often still tick over fine and would only show on higher revs running to lean it will eventually burn a hole in the piston so to even begin to get it right you need to get the oil pump sorted out of at the very least make sure you get the correct petrol/oil mix

sounds like a result check tyres havent all cracked up from standing and good luck with the mot

get some decent lube on it to give it a good start but it must feel better to ride now as well

and dont forget to bleed the oil pump once you start using it should be dead easy to do if its anything like the old suzuki gt250's were

got to agree for short term repair (bodge) you can use a metal ti either drink or food cut it down its length wrap it round the exhaust with a bit of exhaust paste also then jubilee clip at each end to hold it in place i wouldnt say use this for long term but it would certainly get you home

you need to ride the bike and get it warm and then check plug just idling and revving it stationary will not give a good indication at all and what percentage premix are you running it on?

and dont forget to undo the front sprocket before removing the chain

have you done any quotes with her as main driver being a learner and adding you to the policy as a named driver that can work out ok sometimes

think yo will be looking at getting them made as a one off thing never seen the v4 with drag pipes the vt yes the vf no due to the cylinder layout

 

Jardine and Cobra make a slip on set of 2" drag pipes for the vf, just thought I'd ask here before ordering new from custom cruisers.

Edit: Jardine are currently unavailable but Cobra are still available. I had a set on my first vf that I had in '00-01.

ah you mean just silencers i thought you meant full pipes so you ended up with four unbaffled open pipes with no silencing a all

yep they clip together or connect with velcro you throw them over the pillion seat put the rest of your luggage on top of them and just strap it all down or if carrying a pillion they can sit on the straps

Get a Vango two man tent. Can't go wrong with vango gear.
