  1. I woke up this morning and thanks to tiggie i had a moment of inspiration. I've bought a tube of 1m carbon fibre tube, some rivets, cables ties, and heat wrapping. Its gonna be a DIY Saturday, lets see how this goes. Genuine question though in the pic above, it looks like the exhaust has an inner tube... WHat is the purpose of this? Would the baffle have been fitted around this? I don't actually think the bike had its baffles in place beforehand. How does this effect drive? People tell me it affects the the torque, but is it significant?
  2. /\/\/\---This is the kind of solid advice i came here looking for
  3. @MrBrightside, Thats kinda what I'm thinking! The previous owner clearly did that. Taking a closer look, the piping he got was just some random pipe of a convenient diameter. Here are some pics uncovering the professional bodge job he did... Can anyone identify the material he has used for the tubing that is attached above? J
  4. Weld the exhaust back on! That means going back down the M25 and finding where it fell off, somewhere between leatherhead and cobham. That thing is long gone... I'll get a pic up tonight.
  5. Hi Everyone, bveen a good while since a poked my head in here... And on this occasion itsa minor SoS call. So im riding back from Brussels, on the last 30miles stretch when i here a rattle and then my engine seems to get CRAZY loud, like hurt my ears loud. So i stopped at the next pterol stop to take a look. Low and behold part of my exhaust had fallen off. So now i need to fix it im hoping someone here can help me save a few bob and economise becuase a full exhaust systems is like £4-500. Im Riding a Yamaha XVS650A . One of the the exhausts (the one the comes out the front cylinder - the longer one) has come apart in the center. It is apparent now that the exhaust was in two pieces, previously it was hidden by the fact it was wrapped with heat proof wrapping. The part connected to the engine looks like a standard chrome exhaust. The joint is appear to just be a tapered angle and the rear section hammered on then fix to the frame. (the fixing had snapped, my repair was a steel cable tie). Has anyone encounter this type of exhaust fixing? know where i might go to purchase a replacement? If my description sucks, say so and ill snap a pic, for everyone to have a look and laugh at. (it is pretty funny). Hope y'all been maximising the good weather when we've had it!
  6. Hehe this is a classic...
  7. I had a GPZ500 so it may not be quite the same but... There was one fuse box which was next to the battery. All fuses are important! If you have a haynes manual that is your best bet to understand the electronic workings of your bike. If you got your google wizardry on i'm sure you might be able to find the wiring schematics. And yes change that fuse with one that fits. The main thing is having the ampage correct, if it kinda fits but is in place nice and tight i wouldn't worry too much. J
  8. Fair enough on the engine limitations.. I was just abit shocked to here such an extreme statement... What good can come from not racing, unless crutchlow wants to be MotoGP's = of Formula 1's Nico Rosburg!
  9. Fingerscrossed im gonna be there... im 50% of the way there cash wise to get a new bike and kit... 3 more paychecks to get me 100%!
  10. This is the article im talking about: http://www.bbc.co.uk/sport/0/motogp/22063792 Im shocked, sounds like a massively poor attitude... He "may as well not race because they didn't collect data from the pre-season race"??? Why? Surely you should be ready to race and win (do your best) no matter what? Is there something im missing? or is this just a new age biker who swears by technogadgetry and not 'pure racing'?
  11. Right cheers pointblank, i've begun to notice more details, if i turn ignition to on and i get the click, but then rather than keep trying go to off, then turn back to on.. it will start... so it seems likely something with the ignition is not quite right or it was fluke the last couple of times... I'll have to discover how this ignition system is all wired up and how the components fit together so i understand this = ignition. this =motor. this =solenoid .this = brushes, and it should clear it all up for me.. which means lovely weekend project.
  12. Yo Megawatt... personally i cant do sunday, as im off to a festival... and i can garauntee sunday will be recovery day /possibly if i have life left in me nottinghill festival party time. Having said that if later in the weekend works better as a general consensus for everyone im happy to comply and see what can be done... but my preference is saturday. We just need people to pipe up! ninereeds would be great! yes thumb pulling from asses is always a good idea!
  13. Guys i was thinking who wants to take one of our three days to go on a rideout that weekend? Personally i was thinking of taking the saturday (25 aug) and using it to go for an all day blast around these southern parts... Anyone else up for it? my thinking is just a one day solid riding, we meet up in the morning ride all afternoon have a pitstop then another route and then eventually return back to wherever we have come from? as for exact routes i dont have any... so any suggestion more than welcome...
  14. ill actually give that a look, as it's started happening again...
  15. just a heads up on a solved issue... a whole load-a WD-40 down the ignition sorted the issue
  16. acid batteries, will have charge when brand new... gel ones won't... that should help you decide about your charge needs.
  17. I'll try that aswell mega... Just seent his thread: http://www.high-speed.ismysite.co.uk/phpBB3/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=6829&sid=23033832aad3cfd169293698786e367f&start=15 talks about the exact issue i'm having... to summarise, it sounds like a dodgy ignition switch... that is inherent with the GPZ500s. Talks about using the kill switch to stop the engine, and the ignition key to just start the bike as a fix... the proper fix would be to just buy a new one but then that would be too easy soo guess ill do the basic checks and try this....
  18. Back to starter issues again! so over the rally i noticed that when i hit starter button, i got one click and nothing, hit it a second time and bike kicked into life as normal... At first i thought nothing, but it's been repeatedly happening now, today for the first time it took a fourth attempt to get it going... It sounds like the solenoid is sticking (the click comes from there). So far im thinking loose connection? bit of dirt? corrosion? yet these all seem like rather iffy suspicions... and it can't be the battery as when it does start it it is as if nothing at all was wrong... anyhow ones the rain lets up i was gonna have a look at the electrical side of things but maybe there are other potential explanations worth considering... So any ideas?
  19. My favorite stop along the A1 - This place is literally part of a fuel services station along the A1, and can't be missed... After passing it a few times had to share the constant chuckles it gives me. [album]370[/album] For those interested in visiting it's near St Neots
  20. I use sdoc dry lube and sdoc chain cleaner they do a fine and dandy job. to be quite honest as is always the case companies have been creatuive and come up with many different methods to achieve the same one. I chose dry lube oil it brilliant. clean your chain with whatever. let it dry go for a 10min ride or so to warm the chain. (no longer rmbr there is no lubricant atm) then spray the dry chain oil on. Why warm, that helps the oil bind to the chain and not flick off when you next ride it. also every 500miles as per the manual - i oil and clean. may given an additional oilling here and there if im feeling paranoid
  21. About 3 that's way past beer o'clock I hope to be there by 2 but as its out of my control it could be anytime! Seems i oughta expect some rather boozed faces upon arrival

    engine oil

Bike is at around 34k miles. I believe the oil filter was changed at around 31k. (previous owner had changed it. If i rmbr correctly the engine holds about 1ltr of oil in total? somewhere in the region of 300-400ml... imagining the viewing gauge from abit above the lower limit to the full line. Someones : gonna get a slap! but then you're probably right and i'm in denial.

    engine oil

Talking of oil.... I seem to be topping mine up every month! It's quite odd. What i ahvent yet figured out is if it is a sudden drop or gradual. bar taking a log of whats going on daily im having a hard time finding a trend. aside from i take note of the date i fill and the last two times have been about 1month apart. It may be worth mentioning in 2months i have done 1000miles.
  24. Cool, guess i'll do as little as possible... thanks to the road leading to Mr Ohjayshouse yesterday Im gonna have to give my bike a massive wash down. It's caked in mud and looking very sad! gonna be a great way to start my friday!
