  1. I have done the rework on the side panel; undercoat done, but final finish still needed. Looks a lot better - needed to do that to give a decent base for the decals which arrive soon. Before (in front of dartboard) and after. The edge is now much more defined. Still not perfect, but the top edge is under the seat edge, so is less visible,
  2. Nice progress on that airbox matey, definitely easier with plastic parts - all mine are metal and took a lot to clean / de-rust and bring back to life. I’m still finding out bits missing from the previous owners attempts to f@ck with the bike - god only know what he was doing… Sorry I can’t help on the routing of the Carb overflows. My bike came with no engine so none of my pics show anything other than a breather / drain that leads down from the airbox. Nice progress and thanks for the update. Again, I’m learning of possible things to come from the fact that you’re ahead of me on your build. Hope you are able to tap the brain of one of the others here to sort your problem.

    Hai!

Hi Isla and welcome to the forum.
  4. Mate, thanks for that. I’ll take some measurements and see how it goes. Much appreciated.
  5. Also found a local welder who, in his words, likes a challenge and has agreed to have a go and repairing the rusty edge of my seat pan. Lovely guy, but the proof of the pudding is in the eating as they say. I’ll report back when he’s had a play. The mudguards and rear wheel rims are at the re-chromers - but I’ll have to source a new front rim as that was beyond repair . He reckons they’ll be able to fit it in after 6-8 weeks… Then I’ll have to get my head around re-spoking them. Slow progress, but progress nonetheless. I’m beginning to run out of parts to work on for now, but still have some challenges ahead. Sourcing a key - a local locksmith has agreed to have a look at the ignition and see if he can recreate the key for me - I can’t spray the tank until I can access the petrol cap so this is a big one. However, in the meantime, the big job will be the frame - finish the rub down, prime and respray. That’ll keep me out of mischief for a while…
  6. I have managed to get the primer, gloss and clear on 20 pieces of my CB, all now safely tucked away and am working through the second batch; another 16 parts on the go. Spent most of yesterday rubbing down and preparing parts for painting and they’re looking OK for now, but because of the complex shapes I thought I’d hand paint (brush) Hammerite onto a couple - they really didn’t come out well, so had to start again and turn back to the Smooth Black spray version. Much more pleased with that. The side panels have had a clear coat and are ready for decals, although I’m not happy with one side and may start that again. You can only really tell after you’ve sprayed but I’ll be happier with a do-over on that one.
  7. That frame and the yokes are looking in mint condition there matey. I’m just working on my yolks at the moment, using hammerite instead - I work in Insurance and they don’t have sandblasting and spraying equipment handy (perhaps they should branch out ). You mentioned changing the bearings to taper bearings. How do you go about doing that? Is there room to do that and how did you go about sourcing the parts. I was planning on reusing my original parts with loads of grease as they looked Ok, but this might be an alternative option. Any advice? Thanks and keep up the good work!
  8. This forum is definitely a learning experience. I was wondering how to test and ‘fix’ a horn on my ‘Rusty’ restoration. Thanks for the share.
  9. A big part of the Advanced Riding IAM test is about progression but I’d certainly think twice passing a bin lorry with guys working whilst also wanting to avoid riding into the path of an oncoming van. The circumstances for the failure must have been very in a short window. There’s a fine line sometimes between progression and risk… Would definitely encourage him to keep trying. We all know it’s worth it!!’
  10. I have used custom silicone ear plugs for many years and know what you mean about them being uncomfortable after a while - for example, I can’t sleep with them in to ward off my biker bud’s snoring on a trip - but they’re OK for a week long bike trip when I know I’ll be taking them out at coffee / cake stops. They don’t tend to irritate in those circumstances. My main concern is losing the bl@@dy things when I take them out… I was wondering how long you’ve had them, and whether it’s just a case they they’re a bad fit (or need replacing).
  11. Sounds like you’re well into it already @Fozzie. I wish new old stock parts were quite as available on my 1980 project, but I’m managing. The blue sounds like a good choice; very striking colour for a bike. I know what you mean about 17yo newbies. It’s the pointless / cheap modifications that you’re now battling with that are frustrating. All a bike really needs is a regular clean and maintenance to protect its value to make it easier to move to something more enticing as your skill develop. But what 17yo ever made a rational choice in such matters?!?
  12. Final colour of the side panel - just needs the final decals and clear coats then it’s all done.

    Yes!

Age should never be a factor, but your undoubted experience would have been. Really chuffed that you’ve got yourself sorted.
  14. I’m always in the option 2 camp on such matters @Fozzie. Maybe it’s a similar feeling of sadness for a once popular starter bike for someone that has since fallen on hard times, but the old boy almost deserves a chance at being great again.
  15. GojuRyu5

    Yes!

Brilliant news. Many congratulations! Onwards and upwards.
  16. By way of an update, I’ve done some more work on the plastic side panel today to recreate the missing lug. Quite chuffed with the result.
  17. Thanks bud. I’m a bit too much out of practice to be consistent but the board and the set up was an essential part of the workshop redesign over the winter. It was a good way to stave off the boredom before the CB project came along in May. At the moment it’s a drying rack for the Hammerite parts that are taking forever to cure…
  18. This was an amazing series of episodes, to see the state of the roads, the help she receives from various places, the open air repairs and the state of that clutch. Well worth a watch.
  19. Whoa, that DT175 looks immaculate! Something to aspire to.
  20. My manual definitely has a measurement on the mixture screw - it quoted in the number of turns / half turns from fully in. The rest seem to need to be firmly seated but scrupulously clean.
  21. Ben, I’ve just come across your thread and it has been fascinating to read through. Very brave to put all the nuts and bolts in a pile (the OCD in me has to have them bagged and labelled as I go). You’re doing a great job and the paint work looks stunning (love the red shock BTW). I’m not quite at the rebuild stage for my CB100N project “Rusty” (thread in this category) and have just started respraying pieces. They’re coming out OK, but I used Hammerite black spray on some parts which is taking FOREVER to dry. Already scuffed a couple of parts because it hadn’t cured as expected . But it’s a learning curve and this is also my first project. Can I ask though? I think you mentioned shot-blasting a few parts? Did you do that yourself or did you find someone local to you to do that. If so, was it expensive? I have a few pieces that might benefit from shot-blasting but am nervous of pushing the cost up, so am concentrating on elbow grease and wet & dry at the moment. My frame was very rusty and getting into all the nooks and crannies is a challenge with hand tools, but I’ll get there. I can’t wait for the start of the rebuild though, and your comment about how that felt made me smile. Nice work. Keep the pictures coming, I’ll be watching with interest. Have a great day.
  22. Morning all. I’m taking advantage of my work’s 9 day fortnight policy today - “…get your work done, and take an extra day off every fortnight with no loss of pay or benefits…”. Last few days have been busy to get on top of the work, so am going to enjoy the break. In the garage re-spraying motorcycle parts. Heaven. Have a great day, all.

    Hello

Hi John. A bit too far away for me, but I’m sure there are others who are closer. Enjoy the forum.
  24. Hello there. Welcome
  25. Also, I think I need some stickers like that in my life…
