1mirror

2signal

3life saver (right shoulder)

4slow down and manouver into position in road

5life saver

6turn into road

but when turning left, i read you are ment to do a live saver over your right shoulder, aswell as your left but when is this done?

The last life saver you do should be the way you will be turning. I always (well pretty much) do 2 on each shoulder when approaching and then a last before I go! Are you asking from a passing of MOD 2 point of veiw or just a general question on how people do it? I think there might be quite a few different answers is all, so if its for passing a test ask your instructor....

For the purposes of a test I was told,

1) mirror

2) life saver

3) signal

4) life saver

5) Turn.....

As you can see there will be differnet methods so best bet is to ask your instructor.

I did as polecat said ... If it helps any, try to imagine a really fast push bike trying to under take you as your approaching the turn ... lifesaver just to make sure hes not there :)

I failed my mod 2 test so what do i know but in the interests of the discussion

I would say on number 4 -manourver then slow down-

I picked up a minor on my failed mod 2 test for not carrying/maintaining the adequate pace far enough.

Re lifesavers - I now see it as ' look the side you are going to move into but doing an extra on the other side beforehand would not be wasted on the test.costs nothing to do and if you are actually looking as you do them it should reassure you that you know what is around you before you monourve and ease off the throttle

good luck or should I say Good Look !

I've seen a couple of takes on turning. The old OSM (PSL). Aka Mirrors/Back look, Signal, Position, Signal, Look.

Others say, Mirrors, Signal, life Saver, turn.

One finaly alternative:

Mirrors, Full look around, signal. Position. Final Look.. turn. Cancel signal.

Whats the best and easiest approach to remember. I suppose the last works best for me

I'm wary of giving advice on this because they change what's acceptable all the time, so the way i was taught may be totally wrong now.

Method 1:

(1) Rear observation over right shoulder (not a lifesaver, a rear observation!)

(2) Signal

(3) Lifesaver over left shoulder

(4) Move over to left

(5) Lifesaver over left shoulder just before turning

Method 2:

(1) Check left mirror, then check right mirror.

(2) Signal

(3) Lifesaver over left shoulder

(4) Move over to left

(5) Lifesaver over left shoulder before turning.

Method 2 is obviously the same with the exception that you do 2 mirror checks instead of a rear observation, the advantages being (a) it's quicker/easier to do (b) you're keeping your eyes to the front which is safer. I was told to do this method for my test (i wobbled a lot doing the rear observation  ) and the examiner said my observations were "sensible".

Best to check with your instructor though i'd say.
